Details on next Far Cry game leak, and it’s not what fans expected

captain laserhawk

The next game in the long-running Far Cry series is seemingly set to be Captain Laserhawk Niji Warrior, an adaptation of the Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix animated series on Netflix.

The Far Cry franchise has been surprisingly quiet since 2021. Far Cry 6 was the straw that broke the camel’s back for many fans of the franchise as it ran back many of the same tropes the series has relied upon for years. This was reinforced by the DLC in some ways, as it brought back old villains instead of expanding Far Cry 6’s story.

One of the anomalies in Far Cry’s somewhat formulaic line of sequels was Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. This spin-off was an over-the-top love letter to 80s nostalgia and video game violence. The love for the spin-off was so great that it eventually led to Netflix greenlighting a series based on the property. Recent news suggests that this cult classic has gone full circle and will get a game of its own.

What is the next Far Cry game?

Captain Laserhawk Niji Warrior is set to be the next Far Cry game.

PEGI, the European video games rating board, confirmed the existence of a multiplayer project based on the Netflix animated series. Technically speaking, it’s less a “Far Cry spin-off” and more a spin-off of a Far Cry spin-off. Very little has been gathered from what the game is about based on its description on the PEGI website. The listing appeared on the website and was visible for hours before eventually being deleted.

With a PEGI 12 rating, it’s a sharp contrast to the PEGI 18 rating gained by Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. That means it likely won’t be nearly as vulgar and violent as the show it’s based on. In-game cosmetics and a “death match” mode have also been teased in the description. This implies it will be a predominantly multiplayer game of some kind, but it’s unclear what direction it might go in.

Some fans are hoping it will be a Super Smash Bros-style project. This is because Captain Laserhawk featured dozens of iconic characters from Ubisoft’s franchises such as Assassin’s Creed and Rayman. The roots in Far Cry could also shape up to be a sort of battle royale, however.

When will Captain Laserhawk Niji Warrior be released?

There is no official release date for Captain Laserhawk Niji Warrior.

The PEGI rating leak was the first evidence that the game even existed. Ubisoft has not released any teaser trailers or news about it, nor has there been any discussion about what the next mainline Far Cry game might be. It’s unclear how long the game has been in development for, as the Captain Laserhawk show only came out in October 2023. The ratings board appearance doesn’t necessarily indicate an imminent release, but suggests it isn’t especially far off.

The actual window between a rating from a government entity and release can vary. Games like Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door for Nintendo Switch received a rating from the ESRB at least several months before its actual release while other games like the Red Dead Redemption re-release launched a few months after appearing in these listings. Fans will likely have to wait for official word from Ubisoft.
