Dragon Ball Super manga returns: Who’s writing & where to read

The Dragon Ball Super manga is officially returning following the death of Akira Toriyama, and details on where to read it and who is taking over as writer.

Dragon Ball fans were devastated when Akira Toriyama passed away in March 2024. The Dragon Ball creator was an icon for many anime fans, making his passing from an acute subdural hematoma feel personal for the Dragon Ball community. Though there is a wealth of Dragon Ball content coming up including games like Dragon Ball Project: Multi and anime like Dragon Ball Daima, the manga was on indefinite hiatus.

Now, it’s been announced that the beloved manga is returning, leaving fans hopeful but concerned.

Who’s in charge of Dragon Ball Super after Toriyama’s death?

Toyotarou, who was already known as Toriyama’s chosen successor, will be the author and illustrator of the Dragon Ball Super manga.

Toyotarou

He previously worked alongside Toriyama on the series, even designing his own characters. Since he had such a close connection with Toriyama, fans are hopeful that he will continue the series in a way that honors what was started. Others, however, have expressed that they don’t think Dragon Ball Super will be the same without Toriyama’s signature humor.

Since the last issue of the Dragon Ball Super manga finished off the previous arc, it’s believed that it will return with the start of a new story.

When is Dragon Ball Super manga returning?

There is no release date for the next Dragon Ball Super manga issue, but a return in September 2024 is possible.

In July, the VIZ reader had a small blurb in the last chapter that said Dragon Ball Super would return next month. This blurb was removed the next day and was replaced with a hiatus message. This means that the manga may not be returning in August as previously predicted and could be coming in September instead.

“Until the Dragon Ball Super manga returns to start its new story, Jump will feature illustrations and commentary from Toyotarou, plus special features that’ll make reading the SUPER HERO arc even more fun,” the notification reads.

How to read the Dragon Ball Super manga

Dragon Ball Super can be read through official sources including VIZ and Shueisha.

It’s unclear exactly when Dragon Ball Super will pick up again. Once it’s back, however, it will be available wherever fans were previously reading Dragon Ball Super online. Fans will be able to enjoy the series once again before long.
