Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D is coming, and it may be part of a trilogy

Erdick from Dragon Quest

The Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remake is still alive and is reportedly the start of a trilogy, with platform and release date info coming in rapid-fire fashion.

The Dragon Quest series is arguably the progenitor of the classic JRPG formula. Countless games, from Earthbound to Pokemon cite the Dragon Quest franchise as an inspiration, and with good reason. Dragon Quest established many of the hallmark mechanics of classic JRPGs.

It remains a cultural phenomenon in Japan and gained footing in Western markets in the 2000s, with the series selling over 88 million copies worldwide according to Square Enix. Although Dragon Quest continues to receive modern entries, some fans clamor for the classics to return. In the age of remakes and HD remasters, it’s understandable that fans want a sleeker experience in beloved older games. Square Enix teased “The Legend of Erdrick Draws Near” with the confirmation of a Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D teaser, and leakers add it may be the entire trilogy.

Will the original Dragon Quest trilogy get HD-2D remakes?

Square Enix has only confirmed Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D, but reports suggest the entire trilogy will get remakes.

Midori, a notable leaker who accurately reported Persona 3 Reload news before official announcements, reports Square Enix is working on the Loto/Erdick trilogy of Dragon Quest games. The shift to remaking the trilogy may explain the long delay between the game’s announcement in 2021 and May 2024’s teaser.

However, details on what’s in these remakes are currently unknown. It’s possible Dragon Quest 3 has now baked in Dragon Quest 1 and 2 into its story, while others speculate the trilogy will be released as a bundle. Either way, Midori reports Square Enix will reveal more about Dragon Quest in the June 2024 Nintendo Direct.

Square Enix has confirmed that Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D will come out on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. It’s uncertain whether the game will also arrive on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

When is Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D’s release date?

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D will reportedly launch sometime between 2024 and early 2025.

Midori reports Dragon Quest 3 will likely launch before the end of Square Enix’s fiscal year in March 2025. As one of the most anticipated releases from the publisher, the game release may help Square Enix escape its current rut.

The company reported over $140 million in losses from abandoned projects alone. This was followed by statements that the company would focus on higher-quality releases. With Dragon Quest’s cash cow status, the franchise is likely safe from 2024’s brutal gaming cuts.
