FromSoftware is taking Soulsborne games in a new direction with Elden Ring: Nightreign but one thing is staying the same; it will have DLC.
A strong case can be made that FromSoftware is the best in the business when it comes to delivering high-quality DLC. While the notion of DLC has sometimes been a touchy subject among gamers, expansions like Dark Souls: Artorias of the Abyss and Bloodborne: The Old Hunters are held up among the best in their categories.
Elden Ring took things to a new level with Shadow of the Erdtree, an expansion so big and dense with content it was nominated for multiple game of the year awards. While Nightreign is unique from other FromSoftware games, it’s going to try and live up to the studio’s standard in at least one regard.
Will Elden Ring: Nightreign have DLC?
Elden Ring: Nightreign is set to have DLC that increases replayability.
While Soulsborne games are largely RPGs by nature, Elden Ring: Nightreign is a strange fusion of Roguelike, battle royale, and action game. Players are dropped into the Lands Between and need to hack, slash, and fireball their way through enemies and defeat a boss as the play area shrinks around them.
So how will the Elden Ring: Nightreign DLC work? This was broken down in the description of the deluxe edition.
The Elden Ring: Nightreign DLC will add new playable characters and bosses to the game. It’s unclear what other facets could be added, but this should increase its replayability.
The player character in Elden Ring: Nightreign isn’t a blank canvas that is leveled up over time.
The game will launch with four playable characters: Wylder, Guardian, Recluse, and Duchess. Each character has unique skills that can be used offensively or to increase mobility. They also have different specialties, strengths, and weaknesses. Adding new characters will likely transform the experience.
Alongside the addition of new characters, it’s also confirmed that the Elden Ring: Nightreign DLC will add new bosses.
The primary goal of an Elden Ring: Nightreign run is to survive the increasingly treacherous terrain and defeat a boss. Because of this, new bosses will also shake up the experience. It’s unclear whether other additions like new areas or weapons will be added via DLC.
While players know a fair bit about the DLC, some questions remain unanswered.
Elden Ring: Nightreign will unfortunately continue FromSoftware’s tradition of not offering crossplay. This divides the player base three times over. It’s unclear whether the player base will be split further by dividing DLC owners and non-DLC owners. That could be troublesome, given its emphasis on multiplayer gameplay.
It’s also unclear when the DLC will arrive. Elden Ring: Nightreign will be released on May 30, 2025. FromSoftware DLCs have arrived anywhere from a few months to more than two years after the game’s release. That means it’s anyone’s guess when these new characters and bosses will arrive.
