Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles ending explained

ovelia delita

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles maintains the original ending of the game, but players might need a bit of it explained.

While there are moments of calm and warmth, Final Fantasy Tactics’ story is a sad one. When the dust settles, none of the major characters are better off at the end of the game than they were at the start. Meanwhile, Ivalice still winds up ravaged by war despite the best efforts of Ramza and company.

Still, the post-credits scene is what leaves many players scratching their heads and wiping away tears. So what is the

Why does Ovelia attack Delita in the Final Fantasy Tactics ending?

Ovelia attempts to kill Delita due to her suspicion that Delita played a role in the supposed deaths of Ramza and Alma.

Though Ramza and Alma are confirmed to have survived the battle with Ultima, they are assumed dead by most. The only person aware of their survival is Orran.

While it’s not discussed often, it’s established early on that Alma was one of Ovelia’s few friends. Meanwhile, Ovelia knew Ramza to be a friend of Delita’s, and Ramza was also one of the few people who helped Ovelia without trying to exploit her royal status in turn.

Ramza and Alma dying as part of a plot by Delita upset Ovelia and led her to believe that her days were numbered as well. It can also be implied that Ovelia may have been fleeing in fear of this. Likely fearing for her life, she attempted to defend herself by stabbing Delita.

Does Ovelia kill Delita?

It’s left unclear and open for interpretation whether Delita dies after the ending of Final Fantasy Tactics.

Ovelia is seemingly killed by Delita after she attacks him. Meanwhile, Delita is shown to be wounded by Ovelia but it’s uncertain how grievous these injuries are.

The recurring theme across all fantasy video games is that there is no consistency in what actually results in death. Both Delita and Ovelia can survive significantly worse attacks than a dagger to the chest during their respective stints as guest party members. It’s completely possible that Delita drank an X-Potion and shrugged it off. It’s also possible that Delita succumbs to his wounds and leaves Ivalice poised for another war of succession.

Does Final Fantasy Tactics have multiple endings?

Final Fantasy Tactics does not have multiple endings.

There are multiple parts of the ending sequence, but there aren’t any alternate endings nor are there is there some sort of unlockable “good” ending like in Persona 5. While games like Chrono Trigger offered players the opportunity to get multiple endings long before Final Fantasy Tactics’ release, this was still a scarcity when it comes to 1990s JRPGs.

Final Fantasy Tactics certainly would have benefitted from multiple endings, particularly as it relates to extra characters, but that’s not the case in the original or The Ivalice Chronicles. While the remaster has a bit of new story content, different endings aren’t among them.
