News on Hollow Knight: Silksong has come in at a trickle, but there are still details on its release date, platforms, and story.
With the overwhelming success of Team Cherry’s Hollow Knight, it’s no surprise that its sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, is the subject of plenty of discussion and speculation among fans. The original Hollow Knight was released in 2017 for PC and in 2018 for all major consoles. Since then, the indie gem has garnered high praise from critics and gathered a legion of devoted fans. The game landing on subscription services like PlayStation Plus, and standing as a great game to play on Steam Deck hasn’t hurt matters.
The sequel is currently in active development, and while not everything is known yet, a great deal of information about is already available. Here are all the key details on the game.
When will Hollow Knight: Silksong come out?
Hollow Knight: Silksong does not yet have a confirmed release date. The game is in active development since being revealed in 2019 but Team Cherry’s official release window is “to be decided.”
This means that nobody knows for sure when the game will be released, but there’s enough information to make an educated guess. Silksong has been in development for some time and there have been multiple trailers featuring detailed gameplay footage. It’s unknown what is holding the game back from release, but looks to be in an advanced state of development.
What platforms is Hollow Knight: Silksong coming out on?
Hollow Knight: Silksong is confirmed to be coming out on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.
The original Hollow Knight title was made available across all major consoles and PC, and its sequel will receive similar treatment. It is unknown how much Hollow Knight: Silksong will cost. Its predecessor launched with just a $15 price tag but the long development cycle, established name, and increased scale of Team Cherry could force that number to come up.
What is the story of Hollow Knight: Silksong?
Hollow Knight: Silksong centers around Hornet, the Princess-Protector of the kingdom of Hallownest.
Hornet should be a familiar sight to fans of the original game, where she appears as both a boss encounter and a recurring ally. In contrast to the original game’s near-anonymous Knight protagonist, Hornet is a more well-defined character with dialogue and a voice.
The setting of Silksong remains shrouded in some mystery, but some elements have been revealed. The game will take place in another kingdom, separate from Hallownest. Hornet is taken there against her will and will need to explore this new land. It appears the primary objective of Silksong will be to ascend to the peak of this strange kingdom, for reasons currently unknown.
What’s new in Hollow Knight: Silksong?
Hollow Knight: Silksong will give players a different set of abilities with Hornet, and a brand new world to explore.
The acrobatic combat and exploration of the original Hollow Knight were some of its standout features, so it’s natural to hope for more of the same in the sequel. Based on the gameplay footage available so far, fans have plenty of reason to be excited.
Hornet’s moveset appears to be just as nimble and acrobatic as what was seen in the original. That being said, she will move in a different way than the Knight, with her own unique set of skills and tools.
Much like the original Hollow Knight, Silksong’s gameplay will combine serene adventuring with intense boss fights. At least 150 brand-new enemy types will make an appearance, meaning even seasoned Hollow Knight veterans will have new challenges.
As with the original, the core gameplay can be described as a modern Metroidvania with Soulslike elements. The role-playing elements of Hollow Knight will also be expanded in Silksong, with a greater emphasis on quests and interactions with NPCs. In short, Hollow Knight fans should be in for a real treat with an all new kingdom to discover, beautifully rendered by developer Team Cherry artists and scored by Hollow Knight composer Christopher Larkin.
