The Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake has been in limbo for quite some time, but recent reports finally gave fans a glimpse of the beloved action-adventure platformer.
The Prince of Persia franchise has an unfortunate history in the modern era. The Prince of Persia series was iconic in the 1990s into the 2000s. But 2010 saw the negatively-received feature film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and the disappointing Price of Persia: The Forgotten Sands put on ice for over a decade. It wasn’t until 2024 that the franchise received a brand new game, the side-scrolling platformer Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.
The franchise returned to its roots as an action-adventure platformer and returned to the good graces of gamers with that new title. With The Lost Crown garnering critical acclaim, Ubisoft is off to a good with its new era of Prince of Persia games. Still, Sands of Time fans have unfinished business with the past.
Is the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake still in development?
Ubisoft Montreal confirmed that the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake is still in development as of November 2023.
The Sands of Time remake’s development has been messy since its announcement in September 2020 at a Ubisoft Forward show. Initially scheduled for a 2021 release, the backlash against the trailer was so negative that Ubisoft changed studios entirely by May 2022.
Ubisoft Montreal took the reins and reportedly scrapped everything that had been done to that point, per Insider Gaming. Ubisoft would not provide any updates for the remake until November 2023, when they announced the project “passed an important internal milestone.” Insider Gaming adds that Montreal’s version differs significantly from the remake previously developed by Ubisoft Mumbai and Pune and will make numerous aesthetic changes to the game and its characters.
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake will reportedly feature overhauled gameplay, reimagined characters
The Sands of Time remake will reportedly feature overhauled mechanics for parkour and combat that will give it a more “realistic” feel.
The initial trailer for the Sands of Time remake featured graphics more appropriate for an older era of consoles, so it makes sense for Ubisoft to focus on updating the visuals. Henderson also reports that the overhaul extends to the gameplay, story, and voice acting as well.
Yuri Lowenthal will reportedly no longer voice The Prince in the remake. It’s currently unknown who will replace him. Overall, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time seems to be developing at a much healthier pace than before. Fans will have to wait out the sands of time a bit longer for their remake fix.
