Find out the release date for Concord, PS5’s potential Valorant killer

Sony’s State of Play revealed Concord, a game that it hopes will be PlayStation’s own version Valorant and Overwatch 2.

The past few years have made one thing clear about Sony. Despite cancellations, controversies, consistently negative feedback from fans, and catastrophic failures the company continues to develop and promote live-service titles. While recent arrivals like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Foamstars are both seemingly doomed, the success of Helldivers 2 on PlayStation 5 and PC is likely seen as a proof of concept for corporate leadership.

One game that’s currently in development from Sony that may be its next Helldivers 2 is Concord. Developed by Firewalk Studios, the game only received a vague teaser at the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase. A year later, Sony finally revealed more details about the upcoming sci-fi PvP shooter.

What is Concord?

Concord is a sci-fi PvP multiplayer first-person shooter developed by Firewalk Studios.

The Concord teaser trailer showcased the influences of these franchises, with the hectic pace of Call of Duty and Destiny’s sci-fi setting. Although the trailer only showed glimpses of the game, it gave fans plenty to dissect before its official release.

The May 2024 State of Play event gave fans a cinematic look at the game, with a banter-heavy trailer reminiscent of Guardians of the Galaxy. Gameplay-wise, Concord looks to be a middle-ground between Valorant and Apex Legends. The game has characters of different shapes and sizes and skills that range from DPS to area denial.

The game also puts a heavy premium on mobility, with characters shown to be able to fly, dash, roll, and more. This will set it apart from relatively grounded hero shooters like Valorant.

When is Concord’s release date?

Concord will launch on August 23, 2024 for the PlayStation 5 and PC.

The 2024 release window has been known since its initial reveal, but an exact date gave fans something to look forward to. The sudden reveal of the release date doesn’t come as a surprise, given the number of studios attached to the game.

Veterans from Bungie and Activision are at the helm of Firewalk Studios, leading the charge on the game’s development. Leadership at the company have resumes that include Halo, Call of Duty, Destiny, and more. Those names aren’t just eye-catching for fans; they’re the exact kind of games that Sony is hoping to create for itself.

Interestingly, Haven Studios is also attached to Concord. Haven is populated mostly by former Google Stadia staff. It was acquired by Sony in 2023.

The reason for their involvement remains to be seen, but with Sony’s interest in cloud streaming, Concord may be an important title for the growing service. Bungie may also contribute to its development after coming under the PlayStation umbrella. With the release of Destiny 2: The Final Shape coming up, the studio has a bit of free time.

Fans can look forward to getting in on the action later this year.
