Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora might be Ubisoft’s biggest open-world game of 2023, beating out even company centerpiece Assassin’s Creed Mirage.
Massive Entertainment, the developers behind the Tom Clancy’s The Division series, is developing the game. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a brand new story in the Avatar universe, but it is not a tie-in to any of the movies. The game puts players in the role of a Na’vi, who fights against human oppression and occupation. Massive Entertainment has plenty of experience making open-world games in an urban environment, but Avatar will test how the developers fare in a lush jungle world.
Recent gameplay demos show the game’s beautiful setting and how developers hope to use elements of the environment to engage players. Avatar is still one of the biggest brands in Hollywood, but will be looking to deliver its first high-quality video game after two other adaptations fizzled.
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora release date
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is set for a December 7, 2023 release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
The game will be the first Ubisoft title released exclusively on current-generation consoles. Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Skull and Bones on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora uses the latest version of the critically acclaimed Snowdrop engine and, according to the developers, can only run on newer, more powerful hardware. The game looks the part of a current-gen-exclusive, with dense foliage in the jungle environments.
The latest gameplay trailer showed off combat and platforming, alongside flying with a bonded Ikran. The Avatar films have drawn praise for their depictions of movement and travel by the characters, and this game is seemingly committed to living up to that.

With fans moving through the relatively short Assassin’s Creed Mirage and no Far Cry or other Assassin’s Creed coming soon, Avatar might fill the gap for those wanting more of Ubisoft’s take on the open-world action game genre. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora can be pre-ordered for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
