The PSVR2 is set to become compatible with Steam soon, but how can owners get it running on their PC?

The PSVR2 headset launched in February 2023 but there were signs that Sony was stepping away from the hardware less than two years later. As Sony shut down the studios making VR games, it increased the value of the hardware by announcing PC support. Aside from allowing PlayStation 5 owners to enjoy their VR games on PC, it also means VR enthusiasts can make use of the headset without investing in a PS5.

But when will Steam compatibility become available, and what do PSVR2 owners need to do to get their games running on PC? The full process has been confirmed.

How to play PSVR2 games on Steam, PC

The PSVR2 headset can be used on PC through the headset’s PC adapter and a dedicated app that can be downloaded through Steam.

Here’s the step-by-step process:

  • Get the PSVR2 adapter
  • Connect headset to PC through adapter via DisplayPort cable
  • Download and set up the SteamVR app
  • Download and set up the PSVR2 Steam app
  • Launch games

In order to use the PSVR2 on PC, users will need to download both the SteamVR App and the dedicated PSVR2 Steam app. According to the Steam app’s page, the latter will become available on August 6. Aside from playing PSVR2 games, users will be able to access VR games from Steam’s own library that aren’t available on PS5. The most notable titles include Half-Life: Alyx, War Thunder, and Fallout 4 VR.

Users can update the firmware for the headset and controllers, and adjust internal settings through the app. Obviously, anyone who wants to make use of the app will need to check their PC’s specs and ensure they’re powerful enough to run these games with settings. The PSVR2’s system requirements are detailed on the app’s Steam page.

What you need to play PSVR2 on PC

PSVR2 owners will need to download the SteamVR app, the PSVR2 app on Steam, purchase the PSVR2-PC adapter, and connect the PSVR2 headset via a DisplayPort cable.

Users will need to download and set up the two apps required to use the headset on Steam. These are both free. From there, a PSVR2 PC adapter and a DisplayPort cable that is compatible with DisplayPort 1.4 are required. The adapter can be purchased directly from the official PlayStation website‘s store. DisplayPort cables need to be bought separately but can be found through any major online retailer Amazon and eBay.

The PSVR can be connected to a PC using the adapter and DisplayPort cable. Then, with the PSVR2 and SteamVR apps downloaded, users can set up the PSVR2 on PC from there.

Sony has warned that some of the PSVR2 features won’t work on PC since they were made with the PS5 in mind. Examples include haptic feedback, the DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers, and eye tracking.

However, other such features will be supported on PC, such as 4K visuals, 110-degree field of view, and see-through view.
