Baki-Dou: The Invincible Samurai takes a shocking turn when Sea King Retsu dies at the hands of Miyamoto Musashi, but fans might be wondering just how permanent that death really is.

Musashi’s run in the Grappler Baki series is interesting for its unique approach to the legendary samurai. While there are many romantic portrayals of the real-life swordsman, including manga series like Vagabond, Baki-Dou goes in another direction. Musashi is ultimately remembered to this day because he was very good at killing people, and that’s how he’s portrayed here.

There are many victims of this, foremost among them being Sea King Retsu. The ultimate embodiment of Chinese kenpo is nearly bisected by Musashi, and is declared dead afterwards. But death isn’t always permanent in fictional media, so does he ever come back? Warning: major spoilers ahead for the Baki franchise ahead.

Did Sea King Retsu really die in Baki-Dou: The Invincible Samurai?

Sea King Retsu actually dies during his fight with Miyamoto Musashi.

While the Baki franchise is known for its often absurd feats of physicality, even author Keisuke Itagaki has his limits Retsu is struck with Musashi’s sword, which goes through-and-through across his abdomen. He quickly bleeds out from this and dies in the underground arena’s ring.

The release of the Baki-Dou anime in 2026 comes roughly 10 years after the fight occurred in the manga. To date, there is no indication that Retsu somehow secretly survived the fight. In fact, his death has been followed-up upon in a few ways.

Does Sea King Retsu come back?

Sea King Retsu makes appearances in both the mainline Baki series and a spin-off manga following his death at the hands of Miyamoto Musashi. These appearances are quite different and somewhat contradictory.

In the 2018 Baki-Dou manga series, which is centered around the second coming of the original sumo wrestler Nomi No Sukune, it is revealed that doctors removed one of Retsu’s arms following his death. This arm is then transplanted onto Katsumi Orochi to replace the arm he lost during his fight with Pickle.

Retsu is then shown as something of a ghost that follows Katsumi around. He is also shown to have the ability to briefly control Katsumi’s body, using his kung fu techniques to complement Katsumi’s karate. Katsumi has only fought once in the manga since Retsu’s death. It’s uncertain whether this will become the norm for the characters going forward.

Alongside this is the “Baki Gaiden: Retsu Kaiou wa Isekai Tensei Shitemo Ikkou ni Kamawan” spin-off manga. As the title suggests, this is an isekai manga that sees Retsu transported to another world after his death. This “other world” is a high fantasy setting that allows Retsu to test his skills against literal monsters, a situation he revels in.

“Retsu Kaiou wa Isekai Tensei Shitemo Ikkou ni Kamawan” is among the longest-running Baki mini-series. It’s unclear whether this series is canonical, but the combination of its longevity and the appearance of his ghost suggest that Sea King Retsu will remain dead in a truly permanent way.
