Here’s what to know about Demacia before the next Arcane spinoff

Lux in Demacia League of Legends

With the confirmation of more League of Legends shows like Arcane set in Demacia, fans are eagerly brushing up on lore.

Arcane recently concluded its final season, and fans worldwide already want more from the world of Runeterra. Whereas Arcane focused on the struggle between the twin cities of Zaun and Piltover, the in-game League of Legends world of Runeterra is much more than that. Long-time fans want to see so many iconic nations in animated form after Arcane.

A recent interview with Arcane co-creator Christian Linke confirmed three regions from Runeterra will be the new settings for future projects. One of those regions is the lawful kingdom of Demacia. Those who want to stay ahead of the curve will want to get familiar with Demacia’s lore, especially since it wasn’t mentioned much in Arcane.

What is Demacia in League of Legends?

Demacia is a kingdom in League of Legends that follows strict ideals of justice, honor, and duty but is in political turmoil.

Unlike the brutal nation of Noxus where backstabbing is commonplace, Demacia is a nation founded on strict principles. Founded as a refuge from sorcery after the Rune Wars, Demacia has a rich military background and a reputation as one of the most independent nations in Runeterra. These virtues hide a darker side to the pristine glow of a seemingly utopian nation.

The Hall of Valor in Demacia

Demacia’s government and people aggressively discriminate against mages and magic. Although Heimerdinger in Arcane was suspicious of magic, the Demacnians took things to a new level. The anti-magic sentiment is amplified since Demacia is built on top of petricite, a stone that dampens magical energy. The nation also has a group known as the Mageseekers. These anti-magic hunters are tasked with tracking down rogue mages and destroying magical artifacts.

While Demacia looks perfect from the outside, the kingdom is in deep turmoil. The instability stems from the sudden death of King Jarvan III, who dreamt of mages being accepted into Demacian society without fear. Ironically, the king was slain during the mage uprising headed by an in-game champion, Sylas.

King Jarvan III’s death spurred the region to hate mages even more. This resulted in Demacia becoming more of an anti-mage nation, which went against the late king’s vision. Demacia’s noble families also refused to accept King Jarvan III’s only son, Jarvan IV, as a worthy successor, causing political uncertainty. The political drama in Demacia is similar to what Caitlyn faced in Arcane. Like Jarvan III, she struggled to live up to her deceased parent’s legacy.

These troubles made Demacia suspicious of those outside its borders, including allies. The gradual isolation led to what many believe was the end of Demacia’s golden era.

Which League of Legends champions are from Demacia?

Demacia is home to various fan-favorite League of Legends champions, including Garen, Lucian, Lux, and Sylas. Arcane showrunner Christian Linke didn’t expand on which stories from Demacia the studio would cover. It’s safe to assume the creators will want to expand on some lore elements, given the significant retcons and expansions of lore in Arcane.

Galio, a champion from Demacia

The complete list of Demacian champions who may appear in the upcoming Arcane spin-off include:

  • Fiora
  • Galio
  • Garen
  • Jarvan IV
  • Kayle
  • Morgana
  • Lux
  • Poppy
  • Quinn
  • Shyvana
  • Sona
  • Sylas
  • Vayne
  • Xin Zhao

While a League of Legends spin-off game called The Mageseeker already covers the mage uprising Sylas led, the upcoming show will likely expand more on it. Additional stories stemming from Demacia include the rise to power of the magical sisters Morgana and Kayle and the political struggles with Jarvan IV in the center. With the stellar track record of Studio Fortiche, a Demacia-focused show will almost certainly spark the interest of fans new and old.
