How many players are in Baldur’s Gate 3? Enough to set records

If you’re wondering how many Baldur’s Gate 3 players there are after the game’s successful launch, the answer is changing every day, but can be summed up, “a lot.”

Fans waited for years to play the full version of Baldur’s Gate 3, and that wait seems to be paying off. The game’s release has already been a big success for developer Larian, with Baldur’s Gate 3 players breaking through multiple records on Steam.

How many people are playing Baldur’s Gate 3?

The number of people playing Baldur’s Gate 3 has continued to rise since the game’s August 3 release date, now reaching over 600,000 concurrent players. And that number continues to rise.

It took the new role-playing game less than one full day to pass 500,000 concurrent players, giving it the 11th most concurrent in Steam’s long history. That was more concurrent players than Among Us and Fallout 4, as well as many other popular games.

BG3 didn’t stop climbing there. Now boasting over 630,000 concurrent, the peak number of Baldur’s Gate 3 players has now surpassed Apex Legends, a popular competitive game that is free-to-play. That’s opposed to BG3’s full $60 USD price tag.

While many modern successes in gaming are based around free-to-play models and alternative monetization, games like Baldur’s Gate 3 remain popular and continue to show that traditional single-player experiences have legs.

The production cycle for Baldur’s Gate 3 was long, arduous, and expensive. But the quality it enabled is clear to see for both critics and fans alike. Fans are particularly happy given that there were concerns just prior to release due to apparent review copy delays for the game, which are not often a good sign.

The game is following in the footsteps of such recent titles as Elden Ring and God of War 2, demonstrating the strength of traditional big-budget games.

This doesn’t mean that the tide is suddenly going to turn against free-to-play multiplayer games. Such titles as Valorant, League of Legends, and Dota 2 continue to rake in money for their publishers. But there are few games that work to such an extent, and the success of Baldur’s Gate 3 is a reminder that “old school” games can still make big money for developers and publishers alike.
