How the new Moonsign mechanic works in Genshin Impact

genshin impact moonsign

Genshin Impact Luna I has given way to Nod-Krai, and the new release also comes with a fresh team mechanic unique to the region: Moonsign. Here’s how it works.

The Nod-Krai arc has officially begun, and characters from the region are being released one by one. Much like Fontaine with its Arkhe system or Natlan with its Phlogiston or Nightsoul mechanics, Nod-Krai has its own unique mechanic in the form of Moonsign. This is a team mechanic designed exclusively for units from the new region.

Genshin Impact already has several Moonsign characters such as Ineffa, Lauma, Aino, and Flins, with more on the way. That makes now the perfect time to get familiar with how Moonsign works.

What is Moonsign?

Moonsign is a new party mechanic in Genshin Impact introduced by Nod-Krai units. The Moonsign level increases for every team member from each region. It all started with Ineffa, followed by Aino, Lauma and Flins in Version Luna 1, and players can expect more such characters to come.

A party’s Moonsign can shift between two states: Nascent Gleam and Ascendant Gleam. Running just one Nod-Krai character activates Nascent Gleam, but having at least two pushes the team into Ascendant Gleam. Unlike elemental resonance, these states don’t give fixed buffs. Instead, they change how skills, talents, constellations, weapons, and even artifacts will behave.

In most cases, having two Nod-Krai characters is better than having just one, as Ascendant Gleam usually offers a much greater effect. For example, Ascendant Gleam gives Flins an extra instance of Lunar-Charged damage, and increases the damage he deals from Lunar-charged reactions.

Keep in mind however that Moonsign effects don’t stack with each other. Running three or four Nod-Krai units won’t give any extra benefits beyond those had by having two. In fact, teams built around Lunar reactions often work better with just two Nod-Krai characters and the rest of the team filled by non-Moonsign units. Characters outside Nod-Krai, or non-Moonsign units in general, can strengthen Lunar reactions depending on their element and stats.

If the character’s Elemental Type is:

  • Pyro, Electro, or Cryo: Increases this DMG by 0.9% for every 100 ATK.
  • Hydro: Increases this DMG by 0.6% for every 1,000 Max HP.
  • Geo: Increases this DMG by 1% for every 100 DEF.
  • Anemo or Dendro: Increases this DMG by 2.25% for every 100 Elemental Mastery.

Who are the Moonsign characters?

Moonsign characters are units that come from Nod-Krai. Here’s a list of Moonsign characters so far:

  • Ineffa – Electro Polearm
  • Lauma – Dendro catalyst
  • Aino – Hydro Claymore
  • Flins – Electro Polearm
  • Nefer – Dendro Catalyst

How do Lunar Reactions work?

With the power of Moonlight, characters from Nod-Krai are able to manipulate existing reactions in the game and convert them into Lunar Reactions. As of Luna I, Genshin Impact has two Lunar Reactions: Lunar-Charged and Lunar-Bloom.

Lunar-Charged summons a thundercloud when an enemy is affected by Electro and Hydro, dealing bursts of damage. Lunar-Bloom, on the other hand, drops Verdant Dew, which provides enhancements to certain units. For example, Verdant Dew can roughly triple Lauma’s damage while she’s holding her skill.
