How to install Terraria mods: Start from zero

Players can personalize their Terraria experience using mods, but some fans may want to know how to install Terraria mods on Steam and what tModLoader is.

Sandbox titles like Minecraft and Terraria may be packed with content, but there’s only so much players can get from them before they want more. Personalization and immersion play huge roles in simulation games to maximize the impact of role-playing, and that’s where mods come in. Terraria has a huge modding community, similar to Stardew Valley, with something for everyone. These mods include new mechanics, visual upgrades, and bug fixes. Players have the option of installing mods manually or using mod managers.

Here’s how to install Terraria mods in Steam and how to use the most popular tModLoader method.

How to install mods in Terraria

Players can install mods in Terraria by using mod managers or manually adding them to its game files.

The first way to install mods in Terraria is by using its default method. Before the title had workshop support, players had to navigate wherever its texture pack file was and paste mods there. The downside is players must locate working mods from the internet, which could be dangerous.

Fortunately, the more convenient way is to use Steam Workshop support, which lets gamers install mods by going to the Community Workshop and subscribing to mods. After subscribing to a mod and downloading it, players can activate it by going to the Workshop and Resource Packs option in the game.

Another way to install mods is to use mod managers like Vortex Mod Manager, the tool used by the popular website for gaming mods, Nexus Mods. Players can download files from Nexus Mods and use the website’s modding tool to use mods.

The best way to install mods in Terraria is through tModLoader. It’s a community-made software that creates a larger texture pack or mod option in the player’s Terraria settings. Those with tModLoader can browse and install mods in the game, streamlining the process.

How to use tModLoader

Players can use tModLoader to install mods in Terraria by downloading it from the Steam store.

It’s important to note that tModLoader won’t work if the player hasn’t installed Terraria through Steam.

Here are the steps to download and use tModLoader to install Terraria mods:

  1. Go to the Steam Store
  2. Search “tModLoader” and find the app
  3. Install the application
  4. Once installed, launch tModLoader from the Steam Library which will run a script
  5. Open Terraria with tModLoader

The menu will look normal, but going to the workshop menu will present players with new options. Some new options include Download Mods and Develop Mods. The former lets players browse for new mods, while the latter allows players to make new ones. Players using tModLoader can’t play multiplayer with friends unless all players use the mod manager.
