Is Assassin’s Creed Shadows really going to have a battle pass?

assassin's creed shadows

A leaker claims to have made an unflattering discovery regarding Assassin’s Creed Shadows, specifically that it will have a battle pass.

Ubisoft had an overall rough year in terms of reception to its video games. Although Star Wars Outlaws sold well by most standards, it didn’t perform as well as the company hoped. In addition to commercial disappointments, Ubisoft came under after the reveal of Assassin’s Creed Shadows and its marketing.

Although much of the controversy was made in bad faith, many others also criticized Ubisoft’s insistence on adding microtransactions to single-player experiences. The Assassin’s Creed franchise certainly experienced these with recent games. A new batch of leaks may confirm those fan worries, as Assassin’s Creed Shadows will launch with a battle pass.

What’s in the Assassin’s Creed Shadows battle pass?

The first season of the Assassin’s Creed Shadows battle pass will be called Eyes in the Dark and feature exclusive cosmetics and weapons.

The information came online from Assassin’s Creed leaker @fraxiswinning on Twitter, whose photos were allegedly taken down via copyright strikes. This didn’t stop the images from being copied and posted to other social media platforms, though.

The battle pass will be accessible through a “loading room” for the Animus, wherein the player controls a digital avatar of Yasuke. The battle pass will feature 20 levels overall, and rewards at those tiers will reportedly be free.

Multiple in-game currencies were spotted, with the primary one seemingly called “Isu Coins.” Other resources include Helix Credits, Tatara Coal, and Lacquered Metal. Here are the free rewards included for “Eyes in the Dark”:

  • Cerulean Nexus – Sword
  • Cerulean Guise Hood – Headpiece
  • Cerulean Puzzle Trinket –  Accessory
  • Cerulean Glitch – Sword Sheathe
  • Cerulean Guise Kosode – Uniform
  • 9,050 Isu Coins
  • 22 Tatara Coal
  • 22 Lacquered Metal

The Assassins Creed Shadow Pass will also feature premium content

In addition to free rewards, players can pay Helix Credits for various character packs in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

In addition, partnerships with brands such as Red Bull, Intel, VISA, Sprecher, and BAPE Clothing were spotted. Here are the purchasable cosmetics from the premium Battle Pass content:

  • Kagutsuchi Shinobi Pack Character Pack
  • Sekiryu Weapon Pack
  • Sekiryu Mount
  • Four Seasons Summer Pet
  • Sakura Hideout Props
  • Sekiryu Hideout Props
  • Sakura Weapons Pack

These items can be purchased with either Helix Credits or Isu coins. With so many microtransactions on launch, several players expressed disappointment in Ubisoft. Even so, many have come to expect this and simply hope the game is, at the very least, better than recent Assassin’s Creed outings.

Update: A Ubisoft representative took to Reddit to clarify some details. They clarified that all rewards would be free on the Animus Hub, with no paid battle pass or subscriptions.

Interestingly, they did not deny the battle pass, only denying it would require payment, meaning players still have to earn certain cosmetics through in-game progress.
