Larian Studios is moving away from Baldur’s Gate but that doesn’t mean that the studio is completely dropping support for Baldur’s Gate 3, and it actually has more content and updates planned.
Baldur’s Gate 3 director Swen Vincke announced at GDC 2024 that the game will not receive any DLCs and his team will not make a sequel. The director cited a variety of factors, including working within the confines of Dungeons and Dragons, and stated that the team will work on a new IP. Vincke also believes that Baldur’s Gate 3 is already effectively complete, and there’s little point in expanding it further.
Vincke took to social media to reiterate their confidence that leaving Baldur’s Gate in the hands of Wizards of the Coast was the right decision and added that Larian isn’t leaving the game forever. Luckily there’s still more to come in Baldur’s Gate 3 for fans to get excited about.
Will Baldur’s Gate 3 get more content updates?
Baldur’s Gate 3 is set to receive major content updates including increased modding support and new cinematics.
Vincke discussed this on Twitter, letting fans know that while he won’t be in charge of making Baldur’s Gate 4, there’s still life left in Baldur’s Gate 3. The extra cinematics may be referring to the evil endings as Vincke discussed in an interview with IGN.
Because of the DnD influence, there has always been a lot of freedom in how players engage with NPCs in Baldur’s Gate 3, but fully evil runs through the game lacked impact as characters still moved toward a similar end. Meanwhile, choosing to be evil blocks players out of some content and offers little in return. Players can miss the chance to get good items like the Infernal Rapier and the Jaheera Locket and kill helpful characters like the Druid Grove merchants, but there are no exclusive rewards for making evil choices.
Meanwhile, bad decisions also remove content and storylines with characters like Wyll and Karlach. Players just get Minthara in exchange, who has no quests in Act 2. The endgame conclusions of taking these actions also weren’t as impactful and fleshed out as players hoped, and Baldur’s Gate 3 will seemingly get a major content update remedying this.
Baldur’s Gate 3 may be getting mods on consoles
Baldur’s Gate 3 may be getting official mods, including curated mods that can be used on consoles. This could mean that Baldur’s Gate 3 will receive content and DLC indefinitely, alongside any official updates from Larian.
“So we’re working with Wizards, Sony, Microsoft… a lot of partners to align. We’re trying to get cross-platform curated mods in there so that people on the console can also enjoy the mods that are made for the PC,” Vincke said.
Baldur’s Gate 3 had very strong modding support from the start but Vincke said not every mod will be supported on every platform. It’s unclear if these mods will be free, or if a paid system similar to Creations which offer official paid mods for Skyrim and Fallout 4, with Starfield soon to join them. Few games have had this sort of system but Baldur’s Gate 3 would certainly benefit from this.
