Is Darksiders 4 happening? Here’s what we know so far

After five years on hiatus, the Darksiders franchise returns, and it may be in the form of Darksiders 4.

The Darksiders franchise has the vibes of a cult classic. Although many gamers will recognize its name and share fond memories of the trilogy, it never reached the major box office success status of some other action-adventure franchises. Still, Darksiders has a big enough fandom to remain a potential candidate for new games.

Some fans worried the Darksiders franchise would remain in stasis forever after the 2024 layoffs and cancellations, including of a planned Deus Ex game, that Embracer Group faced. However, THQ Nordic survived the worst of the layoffs and Embracer Group has seemingly regrouped to begin work on its new slate of games.

Darksiders 4 may now be part of those plans.

Is Darksiders 4 really happening?

Darksiders 4 may really happen after THQ Nordic dropped a teaser trailer on the franchise’s official YouTube channel. The teaser showcased a burning hellscape before ending with the quote “Be prepared to ride again.” There was no gameplay nor a reveal of the next protagonist, just a simple teaser that still excited longtime fans.

While the developers haven’t confirmed any details, many speculate the game will play like Remnant. The current developers of Darksiders, Gunfire Games, received critical and commercial acclaim for Remnant, and many fans welcome the formula change. But some veterans yearn for a return to Legend of Zelda-style gameplay. Darksiders 3 took on a more “Soulsvania” approach to its gameplay, while the spin-off Darksiders Genesis was played from a top-down arcade perspective.

As for the protagonist, many assume it will be Strife, as they remain the sole Horseman without a mainline game. Others ambitiously believe Darksiders 4 will feature all four horsemen as playable characters. Notably, Remnant 2 features a three-player cooperative multiplayer mode. Fans hope that the experience will translate into a four-player cooperative mode so players can enjoy all four Horsemen with their friends.

“It won’t be long until we reveal more about where the Darksiders series is going next, but for now, know this… the Four Horsemen will ride again,” THQ Nordic said.

With Xbox having a full slate of games set for 2024 and 2025, the potential of Darksiders 4 being a Day One game may be quite high.
