Genshin Impact has reached millions of players, but will it ever reach the Nintendo Switch?
These days, being on as many platforms as possible works to the benefit of a game like Genshin Impact. After all, a free-to-play title benefits from having tons of players. As Genshin Impact’s stellar numbers over the past few years prove, the multiplatform strategy has worked wonders.
However, Genshin Impact is mysteriously absent from one specific platform. The Nintendo Switch remains untouched by Genshin Impact despite fan demand and the game finally reaching Xbox in 2024. Even so, miHoYo has made it clear in the past that a Switch version was in the cards, but what’s happened to the upcoming Nintendo port?
Will Genshin Impact ever come out on Nintendo Switch?
HoYoverse representatives confirmed in 2022 that a Genshin Impact Switch port is still planned.
In January 2020, miHoYo released a trailer for the Nintendo Switch version of Genshin Impact. Though it only featured the Traveler and Paimon, fans only needed the affirmation of a Switch port to get hyped.
However, the trailer only displayed “Coming Soon” at the end, with no concrete release window. With the trailer’s 4th anniversary in 2024, fans are losing hope that a Switch port will still happen. But according to developer, fans shouldn’t completely check out quite yet.
Is Genshin Impact on Switch canceled?
HoYoverse never officially announced the cancelation of a Nintendo Switch port of Genshin Impact, despite fan speculation.
The latest update came in 2022 when a miHoYo representative confirmed the Switch port was “still in development” in a statement to GoNintendo. The team promised to release more information as it made progress.
The radio silence hasn’t exactly comforted fans, and the game’s console release wasn’t completely smooth. Many fans experienced issues with the PS4 port of Genshin Impact, Sony’s latest console at the time, when the Switch first launched.
In 2024, consoles and phones have become more powerful, and the Switch 2’s official announcement is over the horizon. A native PlayStation 5 version of Genshin Impact launched in 2021. This was followed in 2024 by the game being released on Xbox Series X/S.
HoYoverse hasn’t officially announced any new developments regarding Genshin Impact, but the company hasn’t officially canceled it, either. As a result, some fans stopped worrying about the Genshin Impact Switch port until its official release.
Some are still holding out hope, though. It’s unclear what the hangup has been, whether it’s the technical limitations of the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo being resistant to gacha games, or a secretive exclusivity arrangement with PlayStation. The release of Nintendo’s next-gen console might be a game-changer in this regard.
