The Ghost of Yotei announcement at State of Play excited fans, but will Ghost of Tsushima’s Jin Sakai make an appearance in the sequel?
Fans have waited quite a while for a sequel to the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima. Many assumed it would continue Jin’s story, but those theories were proven wrong with the announcement of Ghost of Yotei. Instead of Jin, the sequel follows Atsu, an Onna-Musha and wanted criminal in Hokkaido.
While fans saw a glimpse of her gameplay, she still looked like a deadly main character. In some ways, she has even more weapons and tricks up her sleeve including flaming katanas and even a gun. Still, some fans wonder if Jin will appear in the sequel.
Will Jin Sakai be in Ghost of Yotei?
Jin will not be alive in Ghost of Yotei, as it takes place over 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima.
Sadly for Jin fans, Ghost of Yotei takes place in 1603. Ghost of Tsushima’s story took place in 1274, so short of introducing magic to series canon, Jin will have been dead for over 300 years by time the sequel starts. Whatever story Jin had concluded long before Ghost of Yotei’s story began.
If Jin makes an appearance in Ghost of Yotei, it will likely be in flashbacks. Ghost of Tsushima featured flashbacks between Jin and Lord Shimura. During her travels, Atsu may find historical texts and depictions of Jin’s legendary story. It could even lead to flashbacks detailing the parts of Jin’s story that players did not get to see.
It wouldn’t be the first time Sucker Punch used flashbacks to tell a unique story. In Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves, the bulk of the game’s story takes place through flashbacks, showcasing how Sly and Bently planned a doomed heist. As for how Atsu and Jin may be connected, Sucker Punch has yet to reveal.
Regardless, Sucker Punch and Sony still have plans for Jin Sakai. The upcoming Ghost of Tsushima movie will adapt the game’s story and possibly expand on it. Some fans speculate something special related to Jin when the movie finally gets a release date, but nothing concrete has surfaced.
Another possibility is having Jin appear as a playable character in any side-game. Ghost of Tsushima is remembered for Jin’s story, but it also included the Ghost of Tsushima: Legends multiplayer mode. It’s possible this could be used to include Jin and other characters from the game.
In the meantime, fans only have to wait a year to play Ghost of Yotei in 2025.
