Sucker Punch has finally revealed its next game with Ghost of Yotei, but is it Ghost of Tsushima 2?
Oftentimes, critics of the PlayStation 5 will point out its lack of games. While not literal, it’s true that many of Sony’s biggest first-party releases have been remakes, remasters, and sequels. When Ghost of Tsushima launched in 2020, fans finally got a new IP for the PlayStation family, the game was a hit.
However, things became silent regarding a Ghost of Tsushima sequel after . Without even a hint of DLC, Sucker Punch hid the plans for its next project well. Fans knew something big was coming, especially after Ghost of Tsushima’s PC port announcement. In the September 2024 State of Play, they finally got the next samurai game from Sucker Punch.
Is Ghost of Tsushima 2 happening?
Ghost of Tsushima 2 is not happening, at least not any time soon; the game will instead by succeeded by Ghost of Yotei.
Instead of a direct continuation of Jin’s story, Sucker Punch revealed Ghost of Yotei. The successor of the “Ghost” moniker follows Atsu, a warrior who wields a sword and shamisen with equal skill. In pre-modern Japan, these women were called Onna-Musha, trained in the art of war like men were, to protect their households.
From the trailer, it looks like Atsu is also an infamous ronin, much like Jin. In many ways, Atsu’s design contrasts with Jin’s. Garbed in lighter colors astride a pale horse, she fits perfectly into the locale of Mount Yotei. In sharp contrast to the organized clans of Tsushima, Mount Yotei is a lawless land outside the jurisdiction of Japan’s shogunate.
In addition to the new location and protagonist, Ghost of Yotei promises new combat mechanics, particularly with its weapons. In the trailer, Atsu is seen dual-wielding katanas, a style Jin never used. In addition, Atsu used a flaming katana, a kusarigama, and, most excitingly for ranged fans, a matchlock rifle.
While there’s a lot to look forward to in the game, Ghost of Yotei is not Ghost of Tsushima 2. Sucker Punch has not confirmed if Jin Sakai’s story will continue.
Ghost of Yotei will launch in 2025.
In a surprising move for a modern AAA title, Sucker Punch attached a release window for Ghost of Yotei within the next year. While delays are always a possibility, Sucker Punch has a good track record of releasing games on schedule.
The trailer’s end gave fans a few seconds of gameplay to chew on, and the cinematic combat looks intact. Thankfully, fans won’t have to wait for too long for the long-awaited sequel.
