A Ghost of Tsushima movie is coming, we may know 1 of its stars

Lord Shimura and Hiroyuki Sanada side by side

Reports claim studios are considering Hiroyuki Sanada for a role in the live-action Ghost of Tsushima movie.

Ghost of Tsushima’s success immediately elevated it in the eyes of Sony and PlayStation fans. Although plans for a Ghost of Tsushima 2 remain under wraps, Sony has already capitalized on the game’s hype through other means. Players praised Ghost of Tsushima’s PC port, and the game currently boasts an all-time peak of over 77,000 players on Steam, surpassing Marvel’s Spider-Man.

Additionally, Sony announced plans for a film adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima in March 2021 under the direction of John Wick director Chad Stahelski. Fans are excited over the idea, but Sony hasn’t given any concrete updates on the film’s production since. However, a recent report claims a popular Japanese actor may join the film’s cast.

Will Hiroyuki Sanada be in the Ghost of Tsushima movie?

Hiroyuki Sanada is reportedly in talks for a role in the Ghost of Tsushima live-action movie.

According to DanielRPK, a notable film industry insider who leaked information about the Kingdom Hearts movie, Hiroyuki Sanada may have a role in Ghost of Tsushima. The esteemed Japanese actor’s presence would boost the movie’s prestige significantly.

Sanada is no stranger to samurai epics, as his roles in 2003’s The Last Samurai and 2024’s Shogun can attest to. He’s also familiar with playing iconic video game ninjas, as he played Scorpion in 2021’s Mortal Kombat. However, fans don’t think Sanada will play Jin Sakai in the upcoming adaptation.

Given the actor’s age and penchant for roles as Japanese leaders, fans have him pegged as Lord Shimura, Jin’s mentor, uncle, and eventual enemy. Jin’s relationship with Shimura is central to the story, with Jin having to reject his sole surviving family member to save Tsushima from a Mongol invasion.

Sanada already played a leader who stubbornly stuck to the old ways in the face of an overwhelming invasion force in The Last Samurai, so he would be a logical fit for Lord Shimura. In The Last Samurai, Sanada played the character Ujio, a samurai who took part in a rebellion against Japan’s newly established Emperor.

Fans also hope Daisuke Tsuji will star in the Ghost of Tsushima movie the role of Jin for the live-action adaptation. After all, Daisuke didn’t just provide the voice for the character, he also provided the face and motion capture. In essence, he’s already played Jin in all the ways that matter. Fans hope they won’t have to wait too long to see the samurai epic on cinema screens.
