Larian Studios announced official mod support for Baldur’s Gate 3 as part of patch 7, and its release date is quite soon.
Baldur’s Gate 3 was one of the biggest hits of 2023 and the most successful title to Larian Studios’ name. Although it already established a solid fandom thanks to its early access period, the player count exploded for the final release. The RPG won a slew of awards on top of posting record-breaking sales for Larian Studios.
Fans were worried over the news that Larian isn’t working on Baldur’s Gate 4 and that there won’t be any paid DLC, all eyes were set on patch 7. Patch 7 was confirmed to add Baldur’s Gate 3 official modding support, alongside major additions to the story including more cutscenes and narrative changes to flesh out evil playthroughs.
While things were quiet for Larian for a time, the team has stepped forward to give more info on what will be the game’s final major content update. Here’s what we know about the release date for Baldur’s Gate 3 patch 7, how official modding support will work, and what else it has to offer.
What’s in Baldur’s Gate 3 patch 7?
Baldur’s Gate 3 will add official mod support, more cutscenes, new endings for dark playthroughs, and other bug fixes and changes.
The highlight of the update is official mod support. Though mods for the game already exist, official mod support will allow players to quickly and easily alter their game. Cosmetic changes, new characters, and new quests are already available and official support will allow this offering to grow further.
Larian’s not just distributing the labor to players, though. Baldur’s Gate 3 will see new cutscenes and endings added in patch 7. CEO Swen Vincke discussed this in March and confirmed that no DLC expansion will be released, but he stated that Larian would continue maintaining the game.
The developer is likely taking its time to avoid a repeat of the patch 6 controversy. The game’s last patch was riddled with bugs, which were specifically stressful for the modders. The upcoming patch 7 will include an official modding tool for Baldur’s Gate 3, likely the reason behind the longer-than-expected delay.
Baldur’s Gate 3 patch 7 release date info
Baldur’s Gate 3 will add official mod support with Patch 7 in September 2024.
Larian Studios promises to bring mod support to all platforms but did not give a specific release window for consoles. Developers invited some mod authors to participate in a closed alpha test of the modding tools on June 3, 2024.
A closed beta for the system will begin in July 2024, though the spots will be limited to around 1,000 players. Other promised features after Patch 7 include an in-game photo mode and crossplay between platforms. Although Larian Studios said Baldur’s Gate 4 will not be under its wing, Baldur’s Gate 3 remains the studio’s baby.
The wait is likely longer than most fans would hope. Baldur’s Gate 3 patches don’t necessarily have a solid release pattern, but there was a pattern nonetheless. The first few patches were released with approximately a month’s gap. As the patches progressed, Larian added a slight delay of a few more days. However, between patches 5 and 6, there was a gap of two and a half months. The layover between patches 6 and 7 will be even longer.
Baldur’s Gate 3 patch 7 adding official mod support, and it’s coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S
Official mods will be available in Baldur’s Gate 3 on PC, Mac, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S consoles.
Although some creative fans have already modded Baldur’s Gate 3, they will now receive official mod support from the developers. Mod.io will handle all official mods for Baldur’s Gate 3, such as content moderation, uploads, guides, and other community features. More details about the modding toolkit can be found on the official Baldur’s Gate 3 Steam Page.
Official Baldur’s Gate 3 mods will first be available on PC, and will be added later to Mac, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
Although not every mod will be allowed through Mod.io because of guidelines from Wizards of the Coast and Larian Studios, no such restrictions exist for mods on third-party platforms. Modders still have access to the Mod.io toolset, though these mods will not receive official support if uploaded on other sites. Larian Studios will implement these mod features for Baldur’s Gate 3 in Patch 7.
