New fan-favorite hide-and-seek game Meccha Chameleon was recently hit by a malware-infused workshop map and a hacking incident through its official Discord, leaving fans wondering if it’s safe to play the game. Meccha Chameleon is easily one of the fastest-growing video games of 2026, selling an incredible 15 million copies since launch. The game mixes the best of making art and playing hide-and-seek, bringing friends together into painterly surroundings while evading searchers on the hunt. Though it’s nothing like a social deduction game, the social vibes recall Among Us during its 2019 viral peak, with that same breakout potential.
The game’s viral nature has unfortunately attracted malicious actors who attempted to breach user PCs through a modded Meccha Chameleon map. Here’s how it happened, and if the game is safe to play yet.
Is it safe to play Meccha Chameleon now?
The developers behind Meccha Chameleon have said that it is now safe to play, as a breach attempt has been fixed as of version 3.1.0 of the game. By July 26, the game was again made completely safe to play, according to its developers.
On July 24, security researcher FeintB revealed that a malicious Steam Workshop map for Meccha Chameleon, uploaded as “Laser Tag Neon,” secretly contained malware. The map would quietly download and try to run a hidden file onto players’ computers, though the final part of this hack attempt never fully went through during testing.
This event was still not known to many players until July 25, when the game’s official Meccha Chameleon Discord server was hacked. According to developers, the hack happened after the team was itself infected while testing the malicious map, which allowed the hacker break in, take over admin accounts, and lock out the development staff.
The hacker then falsely claimed that the game itself had a secret backdoor built into it by the developers, a claim the developers have denied outright. Thankfully, the issue was patched the next day, but the game’s Discord remains unavailable to users.
The developer has made it clear that the actual issue was never with the official game. A modded map had been infected by a hacker, and version 3.1.0 now blocks the malware from running on any Workshop maps. That means the game is, at least in theory, now fully safe to play. But users are still encouraged to beware of less popular modded maps for the time being.
Developers have also advised fans to not follow random Meccha Chameleon accounts on X for the time being, as the official account is not currently online.
The Meccha Chameleon Discord server and social accounts should return to normal in the near future, but its understandable that the game’s developer has seemingly prioritized patching out the actual game’s vulnerabilities first.
Despite this recent malware and hack incident, Meccha Chameleon remains both one of the most widely-played games and one of the most popular games among streamers. While these issues are concerning, the quick response by developers is likely to prevent the title from losing much of that momentum.
