Elden Ring sold extremely well, so a sequel has always been a question of when, not if, it’s happening.
The FromSoftware RPG sold 20 million units and remains one of the most-played RPGs around even after a year. The game has a sprawling open world filled with monsters, dragons, and abominations for players to tackle. Many were blown away by the size of the world and the plethora of secrets to be found in the game.
With big games like Starfield, Diablo 4, and Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom dominating the gaming discourse in 2023, it’s easy to forget about Elden Ring and what’s next for the franchise. Elden Ring isn’t meant to be a one-off game like Bloodborne and fans are waiting anxiously for what’s next.
When is the Elden Ring sequel coming?
There is no official date announced for the Elden Ring sequel yet. Officially speaking there is no Elden Ring sequel confirmed but all signs point to the game being central to a larger IP.
FromSoftware is working on a huge Elden Ring DLC called Shadow of the Erdtree. While the company has gone quiet about it, there are indications that it could come out soon. However, after the DLC it’s unclear what might happen next.
The company releases a Soulslike game every two to three years. Dark Souls III was released in 2016, then Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice came in 2019 followed by Elden Ring in 2022. Compared to other developers in the industry, FromSoftware works fast. Logically, Elden Ring 2 could come out in 2025.
However, there have been indications from FromSoftware’s parent company that it has larger plans for Elden Ring beyond this. There was initially a hint that the game could be spun into a cross-media IP with a TV show or movie, but there’s been no word on whether that will happen. There was also a suggestion that more content for Elden Ring might come out after Shadow of the Erdtree.
As more variables get added, it becomes hard to predict when an Elden Ring sequel might come out. Regardless, fans should still expect a follow-up to the game at some point.
Is FromSoftware working on Elden Ring 2?
FromSoftware has not announced that it is working on Elden Ring 2. However, if an Elden Ring 2 is coming out, the studio would almost certainly be the one to develop it.
FromSoftware has several teams working on multiple projects. One team recently released Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon while another is getting ready for Elden Ring DLC. Over the years, higher-ups in the studio have discussed staggering releases and bringing new games to players at regular intervals. It’s entirely possible that an Elden Ring sequel is already in pre-production, but this is unconfirmed.
Earlier this year, FromSoftware’s parent company Kadokawa Corporation reported a 123% increase in revenue largely due to Elden Ring. The success of the game isn’t lost on the media company, which explicitly stated that it intends to grow out FromSoftware so it can produce more games at an even faster pace.
“We will also make proactive investments in development in-house and continue to develop major titles with the worldwide market in mind,” Kadokawa said in a report.
