Fans are still hopeful that Portal 3 is coming and so are some Valve employees, but is the game actually being made and what could its release date be?
Portal 2 came out back in 2011 and has been left in the past in many ways. Despite the long, long time it’s been, fans of the series are still asking for a Portal 3 from Valve. There are now some hints that Portal 3 could be possible, but is that just a cake-style lie?
Here is what we know about Portal 3.
Are they making a Portal 3?
There is no indication that Valve is developing Portal 3, despite the company putting much more effort into game development over recent years.
Portal writer Erik Wolpaw was once interviewed on the My Perfect Console podcast about the possibility of a threequel. Wolpaw had been attempting to get Valve to make a sequel for years but so far the attempts have failed. Why?
Wolpaw told the podcast host that Valve has a “flat structure” and employees are stretched thin. A few years ago, it almost seemed “destructive” to make a Portal 3 since the company was so focused on specific titles already. Fans still kept up hope anyway, especially when word got around that Valve was developing new games.
Unfortunately for Portal fans, Valve has officially revealed Deadlock a MOBA-hero-shooter hybrid. The game has been hyped up by content creators and closed alpha participants. Deadlock is a big focus for Valve, as is maintaining established ongoing titles like Dota 2 and Counter-Strike 2. And that’s not even considering the maintenance and expansion of Steam and the growth of the Steam Deck.
All this means that Portal 3 likely isn’t an option for Valve at this time.
Portal 3 release date info
Portal 3 will not be coming out any time soon, if it ever does.
The release of Portal 3 is, theoretically, a real possibility. The game sold 4 million copies within its first year and continues to maintain popularity with gamers.
But even if Valve decides to work on the game, its release date would be a long time in the future. Even in a best-case scenario, a AAA video game can take years to develop. There’s no sign that this has started either, as Valve often leaks its in-development projects in advance.
Valve’s developers are currently focused on Deadlock and other popular titles, which will push it back. The game itself will also take a good while to make. The good news for Portal fans is that Valve hasn’t completely forgotten about the game, as it was ported to the Nintendo Switch in 2022.
