An individual who claims to be a leaker states that a new Deus Ex game and a remake of the original are both in the works, with the latter having a release date in the near future. Is that even possible, though?
Eidos Interactive’s Deus Ex was a smash hit at the time and spawned both sequels and prequels. The company and brand have been caught up in the struggles of former parent company Square Enix and current parent company Embracer, which has left both current plans and their future uncertain. A supposed leaker says that a lot is quietly going on with a new installment and a remake of the original game in the works.
This leak comes from 4chan, where the person claimed to have details about a remake of the original Deus Ex including an estimated release date and existence of a sequel. While it’s an interesting idea, it’s worth going over what’s known about the Deus Ex games, what the developers are up to, and whether these claims may be valid.
Will there be a Deus Ex remake?
There is no confirmation from any developers or publishers that a remake of Deus Ex is in the works.
According to an anonymous 4chan leaker, a remake of the original 2000 first-person RPG Deus Ex is in the works but is not being developed by Eidos Montreal. They claim that the remake is being developed in Unreal Engine 5, which is notable as the original was built in Unreal Engine 1. They add that instead of working on the remake, developer Eidos Montreal is working on a brand new title in the series and that it will come “much later.”
Eidos Montreal developed the last Deus Ex game, which was 2016’s Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. The studio’s last game was Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which launched in 2021. It’s unknown what the developer has been working on since. The restructuring at parent company Embracer Group hasn’t publicly impacted the studio, despite other studios being closed down and major projects being canceled.
It was left unspecified who is handling the remake and how large it will be in scope. It’s also unknown how closely the game will stick to the source material, whether it might be something materially different like the Final Fantasy 7 Remake or if it will be like the original but with a graphical overhaul like Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.
When will the Deus Ex remake be released?
According to the anonymous leaker, the Deus Ex remake will launch in Q2 2025 or earlier.
The leaker states that the Deus Ex remake is in a late stage of development. The leaker also claims that the game will be announced near March 2024 and a trailer will be released around the same time.
There still hasn’t been an official announcement or confirmation regarding new Deus Ex games. While there’s no reason to buy into what the leaker, Eidos Montreal has most certainly been working on something over the last three years and it will be revealed eventually.
