Metaphor: ReFantazio main character has a real, canon name

Metaphor: ReFantazio borrows several elements from other Atlus JRPGs, but is giving a “real” or canon name for the main character one of them?

Metaphor: ReFantazio is one of the most anticipated JRPGs of 2024. Developed by Atlus, the studio behind the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei games, Metaphor borrows elements from other Atlus-developed games while introducing new features to keep things fresh for fans.

While Atlus’ games let players name the main character whatever they want, many protagonists have a canonical name. There’s Ren Amamiya in Persona 5, Makoto Yuki in Persona 3, and so on. Now that the demo is here, fans wonder if Metaphor: ReFantazio’s main character has a canon name too.

What is Metaphor: ReFantazio’s main character’s real name?

The canon name for Metaphor: ReFantazio’s main character is Will, according to marketing materials for the game.

Persona 3 Reload explicitly told players the canonical name of its main character. Metaphor does not offer any sort of direction. Thankfully, the trailers give a definitive answer.

In the trailer showing how players can change Archetypes in Metaphor: ReFantazio, the main character was named “Will.” Will is also the default name for the protagonist in the English, Chinese, and Japanese versions of the game. However, other languages give the character a completely different name. For example, the Italian and Spanish versions name him Victor, while he’s named Pedro if the player switches to Portuguese.

Unlike the Pokemon games that give players a set canonical name like Red and Ethan, Atlus is often vague with canonical protagonist names. This is even the case in Atlus’ own official works. For example, Persona 5’s protagonist is canonically named Ren Amamiya while his manga name is Akira Kurusu.

On the other hand, Shin Megami Tensei 4’s protagonist doesn’t have a canonical name since he’s referred to as “Hero” or “Protagonist” everywhere. However, his default name is Flynn, and that’s what most fans run with.

If Metaphor: ReFantazio gets an anime or manga adaptation, or even a spin-off appearance, then Atlus may not name the main character Will. However, Will is the closest thing players have to a canonical name for the Metaphor: ReFantazio protagonist until then.

What is the Metaphor: ReFantazio protagonist’s race?

The protagonist of Metaphor: ReFantazio is of the Elda tribe, which is a race identified with no distinguishing features.

While some races in Metaphor have long ears or horns, the Elda tribe is the only known race in the game to look similar to real-world humans. The protagonist is one of the few members of this nearly extinct race, which is discriminated against thanks to its reputation as a “tainted tribe.”

It’s so bad that soldiers attacked by monstrous “humans” would rather bash on the Eldan protagonist than ask for help, even if it means they’ll die.
