Like a Dragon fans have a lot to look forward to with the upcoming RGG Summit, but will its big reveal be a new mainline game?
After plenty of spin-offs in its universe, Like a Dragon got a new mainline game in January with Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. The game was massively successful, getting rave reviews from fans and critics alike. The story, wackiness, and combat had many fans saying it was definitely a successful follow-up to the transformative Yakuza: Like a Dragon.
Despite having just come out this year, there has been nonstop chatter about a new Like a Dragon game. Recently, a leaked title Yakuza Wars, came to the fore and was met with general negativity from fans. Now, a notable leaker suggested that an official reveal of another new game is imminent.
What is the next Like a Dragon game?
It is unknown what the next Like a Dragon game will be, but it’s likely to be either a new spin-off or a sequel to Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.
A notable leaker known as Diandong Langke Lu Xun, who has leaked information on Sega and Atlus games in the past, posted an image with a dragon on a wanted poster on the A9VG forum. The post on the forum contained an image of a wanted poster with a dragon on it, with references to a game coming out in February and a character’s hairstyle. All these are references that have some sort of connection to the Like a Dragon franchise.
Earlier this year, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio dismissed the idea of making Yakuza Kiwami 3 any time soon. This could open the door for another “Like a Dragon Gaiden” spin-off or possibly a new mainline entry.
Recently, a Facebook page shared an image of Yakuza Wars that pointed to it being a strategy-based mobile game. This came after the name was leaked in July of 2024 when SEGA filed a trademark for the name. Fans hoped it would be another mainline game but the Facebook page claimed it was a mobile game where players “fight side by side with classic characters.”
Reaction to a mobile spin-off was unsurprisingly negative, so fans are hopeful that a reveal of a new console game is coming.
RGG Summit 2024, Tokyo Game Show, or State of Play could host the reveal of the next Like a Dragon game
There are many possible landing spots for the reveal of the next Like a Dragon game.
This is accompanied by the suggestion that a reveal might come at the Tokyo Game Show. It also comes ahead of multiple major gaming events. RGG Summit 2024, which takes place on September 20, 2024. RGG Summit 2024 is a “direct” style showcase event for Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the creators of the Like a Dragon series.
There are also likely showcase events coming in the second half of September including a Nintendo Direct and Sony State of Play.
The broadcast was announced a few weeks ago, with devs stating that new titles would be revealed. This has fans hopeful that they’ll hear about multiple big releases. Will this include the Yakuza Wars mobile game, Yakuza Kiwami 3, a new Judgment game, or something else entirely? It’s unknown but there are many possibilities.
