The next Nintendo Direct event is just around the corner according to both reports and company precedent, with the Nintendo Switch 2 being a possible centerpiece for the presentation.
Nintendo is in an awkward spot right now. The company’s upcoming release calendar is barren save for two big games one trailer each. Despite that, excitement is high thanks to the company’s looming announcement of a generally mysterious next-gen console.
That’s likely to change soon, though. Nintendo historically likes to run a pre-holiday run of direct events. Those are seemingly set to begin in the very near future.
When is the next Nintendo Direct?
A Nintendo Direct is likely to happen in the final week of August, or the first half of September.
Historically speaking, Nintendo runs a string of reveal events in August and September to highlight its major releases for the holiday season. This typically includes a single Nintendo Direct event flanked by at least one other event, dedicated to either a specific game or a Partner Showcase involving indie games.
This has happened every year since 2017, which saw a Nindies Showcase followed by the Nintendo Direct that revealed Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Super Mario Odyssey. The most recent installment in 2023 was the Super Mario Bros Wonder Direct in August, followed by a Nintendo Direct in September.
These events typically, but not always, take place in the first half of September. But according to leakers NateDrake and Pedro Henrique “tvPH” Lutti Lippe, who have revealed notable Nintendo stories as recently as the announcement of the Switch 2, that timetable could be moved up to late August. Regardless, fans can expect something from Nintendo in the coming weeks.
What will be shown at the next Nintendo Direct?
The Nintendo Switch 2’s reveal and information on games such as Metroid Prime 4, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, and Pokemon Legends Z-A would likely be the highlights of the next Nintendo Direct.
Of those three major releases, only Echoes of Wisdom has an official release date and gameplay details. A gameplay reveal was made for Metroid Prime 4, but its release date is simply “2025.” Nothing is known about Pokemon Legends Z-A beyond its cinematic reveal trailer.
There are a number of games that are reportedly up Nintendo’s sleeve. There have been rumbles of more The Legend of Zelda remasters, Splatoon 4, and the resurrection of Star Fox. The list goes on.
Regardless, Nintendo has been actively looking to preempt discussion regarding the Nintendo Switch 2. Whenever the next Nintendo Direct event is announced, the company will likely tell fans what isn’t going to be shown off in advance.
