No More Heroes, Deadly Premonition devs team up for Hotel Barcelona

hotel barcelona

Hotel Barcelona is the brainchild of two legendary developers in Goichi “Suda51” Suda and Hidetaka “Swery” Suehiro, the twisted minds behind the No More Heroes and Deadly Premonition series.

Two of Japan’s quirkiest developers are tag-teaming a new 2.5D brawler. Swery made the Deadly Premonition series, a survival horror game set in small-town America. His latest game, The Good Life, is a role-playing title released in 2021. Suda51 is known for No More Heroes and Lollipop Chainsaw. His latest game, No More Heroes 3, was released in 2021.

It’s only natural that gamers have high expectations for their latest collaborative effort, Hotel Barcelona. From what the released trailers have shown, the duo aims to deliver a stylized, action-heavy experience.

Hotel Barcelona platforms, release date details

Hotel Barcelona is slated for a 2024 release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC through Steam. There’s no exact release date yet.

The game features serial killers inspired by pop culture and American horror movies. The titular Hotel Barcelona is hosting a serial killer convention, and it’s up to the players to take them out. This will see Mortal Kombat-caliber bloody battles with everything from puppet baby dolls to a robotic shark.

In the usual Suda51 style, the enemies are not just simple psychos; they also have supernatural powers. From a roid-raged baseball players to an evil chief infatuated with saws, the menu has variety.

The game was announced with an announcement trailer at the Xbox Digital Broadcast at the Tokyo Game Show. However, the new trailer released at the INDIE Live Expo goes even deeper into the madness of Hotel Barcelona. The hectic hack-and-slash action is accompanied by killer music and shows the main protagonist going through hoards of minions before tackling a boss fight.

Chef’s special, the time loop soup

The action brawler features a unique time loop mechanic that resurrects a player shadow from the past loop to help in the current one.

The shadow-player image can be seen slashing along the player. It could lead to some exciting runs, even if it’s just the past run’s gameplay image. The gameplay is fast and brutal, and the trailers show the main character using plenty of melee weapons. Hotel Barcelona has a variety of weapons, from axes to saw blades. The enemies also hit hard, so timing attacks and dodging around will play a significant role in player success.

Ideally, Hotel Barcelona will be a genuinely fun time with good replayability.

American horror movies inspired Suda51 and Swery and the influence is evident in the parody posters that pop up. The Baseball serial killer, Jacob, looks quite like the Hockey player Jason from Friday the 13th. Swery previously cited “The Shining”, directed by Stanley Kubrick, as one of the game’s inspirations; the new trailer has clear hints of it.
