Pokemon TCG Pocket: Mythical Island release date, best cards

It’s time to start saving up Pack Hourglasses again, because Pokemon has announced the new TCG Pocket mini set Mythical Island and confirmed its release date.

Since the initial launch in October 2024, Pokemon TCG Pocket has garnered over 60 million downloads on Android and iOS. With many nearing the end of the Genetic Apex expansion, The Pokemon Company officially announced the release of a new mini-set. This new expansion, Mythical Island, is based around Mew and seems to pull heavily from the first generation.

Here are the best cards spotted so far in the Pokemon TCG Pocket Mythical Island mini-set, as well as a release date.

The best new cards in Pokemon TCG Pocket’s Mythical Island expansion

Mew ex, Aerodactyl ex, and Blue stand out as some of the best cards in the Mythical Island expansion.

The card that the set is centered around, Mew ex, will be the most exciting pull for most players. Mew ex’s primary move, Genome Hacking, notably requires three energy of any type. This means it can effectively be played in any deck, battling alongside Charizard or Articuno. For competitive players, the new card could form the basis of a new, potentially overpowered meta deck.

The trailer highlights a few other notable cards as well, including another ex and three full art cards. These include:

  • Aerodactyl ex
  • Dedenne
  • Marshadow
  • Vaporeon
  • Blue

Celebi ex is notably listed in the YouTube trailer description but doesn’t make an appearance in the video itself. In addition to Celebi, Mew, and Aerodactyl, fans can expect to find two more ex cards in the set. The Pokemon and designs are unknown. The lineup of Pokemon TCG Pocket’s special immersive ex rares will also expand on Mythical Island’s release date.

Other new cards spotted in the trailer include Snivy, Morelull, and the trainers Blue and Leaf. Duplicates, like Pikachu, and Exeggute, will also show up as part of the set. However, they will have distinct art from Genetic Apex if the sneak peek is anything to go by.

Given that there are over 80 new cards to pull, there are still plenty more surprises still in store for the new mini-set. Now, fans just have to prepare for the expansion’s debut.

Pokemon TCG Pocket Mythical Island release date is confirmed, and it’s soon

Fans will be able to start digitally tearing open Mythical Island packs on December 17.

Once the new expansion set launches, players will have the opportunity to pull from Mythical Island or Genetic Apex when they open the mobile game. The choice, then, is whether to try and focus on completing the first set or pulling something other than the umpteenth Raticate.

After Mythical Island, the next booster to enter Pokemon TCG Pocket will likely be the second full set, complete with another 200 or more cards. Data mines suggest a potential date of January 29, 2025. This gives fans a full month and a half to pull from Mythical Island to their hearts’ contents.

Players should keep their eyes peeled for any and all of the mythical Pokemon that may come out of, well, Pokemon TCG Pocket Mythical Island. The best time to start saving Pack Hourglasses to rip open as many packs as possible was yesterday. The second best time? Today.
