Resident Evil 9 is set to be one of the biggest video game releases of 2026 but is there any hope of the game arriving on Nintendo Switch 2?
The Nintendo Switch 2 is big upgrade over its predecessor in terms of power. Though its specs still fall well short of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, the Switch 2 still enjoys a long list of major multi-platform releases ranging from Persona 3 Reload to Cyberpunk: 2077. That’s a big jump up from the original Switch, which saw few AAA titles from companies other than Nintendo.
Still, that list is far from comprehensive and one of the biggest names missing right now is Resident Evil 9. Is there any hope of the game coming out on the handheld console?
All Resident Evil 9 confirmed platforms
Resident Evil 9 was revealed on June 6, 2025 and was confirmed for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam. The game is not confirmed for release on the Nintendo Switch 2.
The timing of the reveal of Resident Evil 9 is notable, coming a day after the Nintendo Switch 2’s release. Various titles were announced ahead of the Nintendo Switch 2’s official reveal and later confirmed for a Switch 2 release. Unfortunately for fans, that’s not the case here.
Capcom not including the Switch 2 on Resident Evil 9’s list of platforms indicates that the game will not arrive on Nintendo consoles at launch. But does that mean it’s never going to come out?
Will Resident Evil 9 come out on Switch 2?
There is a chance that Resident Evil 9 could come out on Switch 2 at some point in the future. It’s unclear what form that may take, however. There are two possible ways that Resident Evil 9 could end up on Switch 2; either Capcom could spend time optimizing the game for release on the Switch or it could opt for a cloud version.
Numerous AAA titles were launched on Switch 2 following their release on other consoles. While some took years to come out like The Witcher 3 and Nier: Automata, there were also titles like Hogwarts Legacy where it came out on Switch nine months after the initial launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. It’s possible that Capcom is working on a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Resident Evil 9. Unfortunately, if it is, it’s uncertain regarding how long it could take to optimize.
The alternative is a cloud version, which is something Capcom has done in the past. Cloud gaming is becoming increasingly common but while there are services like GeForce Now with long and short-term subscription options that offer a variety of games, Nintendo consoles sell the ability to access individual games.
Most modern Resident Evil games are technically available on the original Nintendo Switch through cloud streaming. This allowed gamers to experience the game, despite the technical limitations of the Switch. The game was graphically superior to what the Switch was capable of at the time.
The drawbacks were that this required a good, stable internet connection and that there were wait times during peak hours. Despite that, players reported generally positive experiences. Reports suggested that games like Kingdom Hearts would see a native release on Switch 2. It remains to be seen if this is indicative of a move away from cloud gaming on consoles.
Resident Evil 9 looks to be graphically ambitious, and it’s unclear whether the Nintendo Switch 2 will be up to the task. Precedent shows that Capcom will find some way to get the game on the console.
