Riot finally revealed Skarner’s VGU, here’s its release date

skarner vgu

Riot Games finally gave League of Legends fans a sneak peek at the VGU of Skarner, something fans have been waiting a long time for.

League of Legends didn’t come out of development looking like it does now. The earliest iterations of League may even look alien to newer players, especially the gameplay and art direction. 2010 saw the first major revamp of champions across the board for League of Legends, both from a visual and gameplay standpoint.

Since then, many champions have received visual and graphic updates, or VGUs for short. Often, Riot gives VGUs to fan favorites who haven’t gotten reworks in a while. These are typically sourced from community polls to gauge how necessary a rework is. Now, Riot Games will soon release the long-awaited update for Skarner.

Skarner VGU release date confirmed

Skarner’s VGU will drop on April 3, 2024, alongside Patch 14.7 for League of Legends.

Skarner’s road to a rework has had many bumps. Riot held the initial community VGU poll that Skarner won in 2022 but several other features stood in the way of the Skarner rework. Although fans expected an early 2023 release, Riot prioritized other features ranging from big like overhauling surrender to small like adding fist bumps

The extent of Skarner’s rework also led to more delays. Everything from Skarner’s base design and overhauls of his abilities meant the devs wanted to take their time, according to Riot. Not only that, Skarner’s lore is set to be reworked to focus more on his feud against the Void and the Ixtali.

Whatever the changes are, fans will know more when Skarner enters the PBE on March 19, 2024.

Confirmed League of Legends VGUs for 2025

Riot confirmed at least two more VGUs are coming in 2025.

In a Look Ahead update video, Riot teased that a character who has already appeared in Arcane will receive a VGU in League of Legends in 2025. Although the champion was not named, the prerequisite of appearing on Arcane narrows the list down to 10 champions. The champions are as follows:

  • Caitlyn
  • Ekko
  • Heimerdinger
  • Jayce
  • Jinx
  • Ryze
  • Singed
  • Vi
  • Viktor

The second confirmed rework will be Shyvana, who will launch sometime after the Arcane champion’s rework. Unlike Skarner’s VGU, Shyvana’s rework will refine her gameplay and lore, as opposed to a complete overhaul. “Think more Udyr, and less Skarner,” as Riot devs state.

Given the workflow for Riot, these two VGUs will likely be released in mid-2025.
