The previously untitled World War 2 Marvel game just got a new name: Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. Does that mean it’s coming soon? And what can we expect from the new game?
The Marvel franchise is still a media juggernaut, but its power has waned recently. While staples such as Guardians of the Galaxy still drew millions at the box office, attempts at making a new generation of heroes into stars, such as The Marvels, have bombed at the box office.
Still, Marvel doesn’t only rely on movies for its mainstream relevance. As the success of Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 in 2023 proved, Marvel has also taken the lead for AAA superhero games. Outside of Insomniac’s ongoing work, Marvel teased an AAA WW2-era title starring Captain America and Black Panther.
Leaks suggest a more substantial reveal might be coming soon. Here’s what we know.
What is the WW2 Marvel game’s title?
Leakers report that the new WW2 Marvel game will be titled Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra.
In 2022, a joint project between Marvel Games and Skydance New Media received a teaser trailer. It depicts Captain America, Black Panther, an unnamed Allied soldier, and an unnamed Wakandan warrior as its protagonists. Kurakasis, a notable leaker who previously reported on Sonic x Shadow Generations prior its announcement, claims the title will be Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra.
This title will be the first release for the new studio. Skydance New Media is a branch of Skydance Media. Before Skydance New Media’s formation, the group exclusively released VR games through Skydance Interactive. Amy Hernig, who acted as creative director and writer for the Legacy of Kain and Uncharted franchises, heads the new game studio.
What will Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra’s story be about?
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra will feature a story that takes place during Marvel’s version of World War 2. Based on the trailer and title, the game will likely take place during World War 2’s closing stretch. The official description highlights “Four Heroes,” which likely means this will be a co-op action game in the vein of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League or Gotham Knights.
It is currently unknown if the Black Panther in this game will be T’Challa himself, or a relative of T’challa’s. The identities of the two non-superhero characters are also unknown. The soldier could be Bucky Barnes, Captain America’s close friend who later became the Winter Soldier.
What’s the release date for Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra?
Marvel has not yet confirmed a release date for Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. When Kurakasis previously leaked the Sonic x Shadow Generations news, an official announcement came soon after. Fans hope that Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra follows a similar pattern.
Even if an official announcement does come soon, that doesn’t necessarily mean fans will be able to get their hands on the actual game in the near future. There may still be a long development road ahead of the game, though it’s possible that it will be some distance along in its progression by the time it’s unveiled.
