The release date of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is quickly approaching and fans of Senua’s Sacrifice might need to catch up on all the story and platform details before it lands.
2017’s hack-and-slash adventure Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice won several awards thanks to Ninja Theory’s unique narrative and the performance of Melina Juergens as Senua and enjoyed generally strong reviews across all platforms, but was particularly well-received on the Xbox One. The game’s sequel was revealed in 2017 and fans have received a steady stream of information about the game since then.
Fans didn’t receive the game, though. News has steadily come out regarding the title, but that has made the wait even more agonizing for some. Thankfully, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 seems poised to double-down on the themes that made the first game so beloved.
What is Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2?
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is an action-adventure game developed by Ninja Theory, set in viking Iceland.
It is the direct sequel to 2017’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and will continue Senua’s journey as she fights both internal and external foes. Similar to the first game, Hellblade 2 will seemingly tackle themes like oppression, dread, and anxiety in a dark fantasy world inspired by Norse and Celtic mythology and history. It will also feature otherworldly beings who will add to the psychological horror mechanics of the game, along with recurring elements like permadeath and puzzles.
According to the game’s synopsis, Hellblade 2 is “a crafted experience told through cinematic immersion, beautifully realized visuals and encapsulating sound.” This claim is backed by the cloud-generating technology that Ninja Theory has given fans a peek of, which aims to make encounters more dramatic, immersive, and refined.
Hellblade 2 also promises to introduce a more “dynamic and realistic” combat system. According to designer Juan Fernández, less than 20 people worked on the first game’s combat, while a significantly higher number of people are working on the sequel to ensure the game’s action is more engaging with more enemy variety.
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 release date and platforms
In the June 2023 Xbox Showcase, Ninja Theory announced that Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 will be released in 2024 for the Xbox Series X/S and PC.
While an exact date for Hellblade 2 hasn’t been given yet, Microsoft has hinted that the January 18 Developer Direct will reveal more information on the game, which might also mean a proper release date.
Hellblade 2 will not be released for the PlayStation 5 on launch as it’s a first-party Xbox title thanks to Microsoft’s acquisition of Ninja Theory in 2018. While the original game was first released on PlayStation 4, that’s out of the question here.
Although PS5 players won’t get the chance to experience Hellblade 2 at launch, with rumors of first-party games like Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves coming to competing platforms, Senua might eventually return to PlayStation consoles. Fans shouldn’t necessarily expect that to happen any time soon however, and shouldn’t get hopes up until other Xbox exclusives start making their way to PlayStation and Nintendo consoles.
