The release date for the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film has been confirmed and fans finally got their first proper look at Shadow in the film.
Paramount Pictures’ live-action Sonic movie franchise started in 2020 and has seen great success. Having played a key role in the rise of video game-based TV shows and movie adaptations, the Blue Blur is about to make his third trip to the silver screen. While the movie was already confirmed to be getting a late 2024 release, the official social media channels for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 have announced the actual release date for the film.
In addition to announcing the reveal, the post has also given fans another look at Shadow the Hedgehog. Whereas the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 post-credit scene showed Shadow’s upper half, this is the first look at his lower half and more importantly his shoes.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 release date confirmed
The official Sonic Movie X account revealed that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will premiere on December 24, 2024.
The movie being released in late 2024 perfectly fits the franchise’s trend of keeping a gap of two years between movies, with the first movie coming out in 2020 and the second one premiered in 2022. This comes after a delay in filming stemming from the SAG-AFTRA strikes. Though work was done on the film with shooting of landscapes for the CGI work in the film, actual actors and actresses play a large part in the Sonic films.
A December 2024 release date might be disappointing for fans who want it now, but they’ll have something to hold them over in the meantime. The Knuckles TV show based on the movies will come out before the third movie installment. The series is set to be released in early 2024, with Idris Elba reprising his role as Knuckles the Echidna in the show.
Shadow the Hedgehog confirmed for Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Shadow the Hedgehog looks almost the same as his video-game counterpart in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Shadow will be wearing his signature “Air Shoes” and will have the “Inhibitor Rings” on his wrists and ankles.
The inhibitor rings are canonically worn by Shadow to limit the amount of innate power he can use, and in the original continuity, they keep his “Chaos Form” in check. This means there’s a chance that Shadow will remove the rings at some point in the movie to access his chaos form. Though Shadow was teased at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, fans only got a brief look at his eyes.
While fans now know how Shadow will look in the third movie, there hasn’t been any announcement on who will voice the “Ultimate Life Form.” The actors from the previous movies are set to reprise their roles, except for Dr. Robotnik’s actor Jim Carrey who may have retired from acting after the release of the last Sonic film. It’s currently unknown if Jim will be returning as Doctor Eggman in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and fans may have to wait until the movie’s release date to find out.
