Konami dropped a story trailer for the Silent Hill 2 remake as hands-on previews started circulating, giving fans a clear picture about what’s new, different, and improved about the game.

Without a doubt, Silent Hill 2 is the king of psychological horror in gaming. While everyone has their personal favorites, nobody can deny the influence Silent Hill 2 had on the horror games industry. Bloober Team, the studio behind the upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake, is a prime example of that influence.

The studio has directly credited Silent Hill 2 as an inspiration for its entire library of games. Layers of Fear and The Medium both feature themes of mental isolation, inner demons, and family trauma. All of these are core themes of Silent Hill 2. The studio is eager to show its favorite game the respect it deserves and has seemingly done a much better job of it than fans expected.

What’s new in the Silent Hill 2 remake?

Silent Hill 2 has expanded its map, added more areas, and introduced new endings.

The new story trailer for the Silent Hill 2 remake was a marked improvement from previous ones. Konami came under fire from fans after it released a combat trailer for Silent Hill 2. In a since-deleted interview, Bloober Team president Piotr Babieno even shifted responsibility for the poorly-received trailer to Konami’s marketing team.

However, the new story trailer showcases all of the remake’s strengths. The updated visuals and voice acting impressed even fans of the original. Fans also got a better look at side characters like Eddie and Laura. In addition, the preview gameplay of the Silent Hill 2 remake has now been released online.

The previews showcased new sections, such as an expansion of Neely’s Bar and more eldritch twists for the apartments. Bloober Team creative director Mateusz Lenart also confirmed the existence of two new endings to Polygon. Lenart even implied it would add “something from the different worlds, from the different game.”

Fans speculate it could hint towards a crossover with other Silent Hill games. Others, admittedly less seriously, think it will cross over with Bloober Team’s games as the studio’s version of a gag ending. Regardless, these previews have reinvigorated hype for Silent Hill 2’s remake.

How is the Silent Hill 2 remake different from the original?

The Silent Hill 2 remake features new content alongside all-new visuals and audio, as well as a new gameplay style.

The remake sees the game ditch the fixed camera of the PlayStation 2 era in favor of an over-the-shoulder perspective. The game’s level design and combat have been adjusted heavily to accommodate this. These are packaged with new trappings like James automatically inspecting newly acquired items.

The game brings back the terrifying enemies, but has seemingly reinvented the characters to some degree. Regardless, the game looks like it remains faithful to the original while modernizing its gameplay.
