The Skate series is coming back with a new game colloquially dubbed Skate 4 and while the game has been surrounded by controversy, a clear picture has been painted regarding its release date, platforms, and PC availability.
EA’s Skate is returning after more than a decade of dormancy since the last Skate game was released in 2010 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. EA announced that a fourth mainline entry in the Skate series was under development in 2020 and confirmed the name to be “skate.” in July 2022.
Although Skate has traditionally been a console-only title, EA has announced that the upcoming game is releasing on PC, which is a first for the series. Alongside its platforms, there’s more information known regarding the title including how it will differentiate itself from its predecessors and what city the game will be based in.
What is Skate?
Skate is a series of skateboarding games published by EA where players perform tricks on a skateboard to score points. The series was meant to be a direct competitor to Activision‘s Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater titles and has generally similar gameplay.
The games take place in an open-world area where players can roam around and do stunts as they please. The more points the player gets, the more challenges and areas are unlocked to explore. As they go through the game, they meet other skateboarding celebrities who they can both compete against and unlock.
Skate 4 is being developed by Full Circle, a new studio established by EA. This new title is a reboot in a brand-new open-world area, and unlike previous titles, Skate will be a free-to-play live-service title available on PC. The game currently does not have a release date.
What sets Skate apart from other skateboarding games is its control system called “Flick-it,” which has players flick the left and right analog sticks of their controllers to do tricks. This trick system, alongside the game’s free-roaming and ragdoll physics, made it a cult classic amongst players and is confirmed to be present in Skate 4.
Will Skate 4 come to PC?
Yes, it has been confirmed that Skate is coming to PC and will be available to purchase on Steam. However, it’s unclear if the game will be purchasable on any other services like the Epic Games Store.
Skate will also be available to play on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC. Although the mobile version hasn’t been announced, the official skate FAQ states that a mobile port is being considered.
Skate is confirmed to have cross-progress, allowing players to transfer their progress and saved data across different platforms. Skate 4 will also feature crossplay, letting fans play “with players across all supported devices.”
Release date details for new Skate game
There is currently no release date for the fourth mainline Skate game, although it’s expected to launch sometime in 2024.
The game has been in development since 2020 and playtesting for Skate 4 has been ongoing since early 2022. However, since the test is on an invite-only basis, not everyone who applied was selected.
