There are fears over the Star Wars Jedi trilogy being canceled after the exit of Fallen Order and Survivor director Stig Asmussen.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and its sequel, Jedi: Survivor, stand among the most highly regarded Star Wars games ever. But according to reports, the director behind both games left Respawn Entertainment and EA Entertainment. This potentially puts the future of the planned Star Wars Jedi trilogy in jeopardy. A trilogy would have seen a sequel after 2019’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and 2023’s Jedi: Survivor. No details on the third game were publicly revealed known.
Asmussen previously indicated he wanted a trilogy of games, which is appropriate given the Star Wars franchise’s penchant for trilogies. But with his exit from the company, that trilogy may not be in the cards. Even if it is, the final entry may not feel the same as its predecessors without Asmussen’s direction.
Is the next Star Wars Jedi game canceled?
It is unknown whether there will be a third Star Wars Jedi game. Jedi: Survivor had a strong average review score and enjoyed stronger sales than Fallen Order so there is a chance it will come back with new names in charge.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor were both headed by Asmussen and his departure might be felt by gamers if the third game comes out. An EA spokesperson confirmed that veteran leaders from Respawn have taken over Asmussen’s responsibilities on Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
As for why Asmussen left, there’s also not much known outside of an EA spokesperson’s statement. The spokesperson said that Asmussen chose to leave after some self-reflection and a desire to start working on projects outside of the company, before wishing him the best of luck. This likely indicates that he will be working with another studio in the future.
Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment has more Star Wars games in the works
Respawn Entertainment is working two new Star Wars games including a first-person shooter and a strategy game.
While the future of the Jedi trilogy may be in question, EA hasn’t put all its eggs in one basket. Back in 2022, the company announced two other projects alongside Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. One of these projects was a first-person shooter game developed by Respawn and directed by Peter Hirschmann. Both are set in the Star Wars universe.
Hirschmann is a veteran of the industry, previously serving as the VP of development in LucasArts when it was still active. The other project is being developed by Bit Reactor, a studio formed with several veterans from the XCOM studio Firaxis. He worked on a number of well-received titles such as Star Wars: The Force Unleashed as well as critically panned Indiana Jones titles.
No details have been revealed for either of these new Star Wars games, but players can likely expect news to come out over the coming months.
