An update to Stardew Valley version 1.6 has officially added hidden cheats, allowing regular players to experiment with the game without using mods.
Despite celebrating its eighth anniversary in 2024, Stardew Valley never really had “cheats” like many PC games. Sure, the Console Commands mod allowed players to use debug commands, but as far as official support goes, players remained tethered to ConcernedApe’s intended balance.
Stardew Valley 1.6 has changed many things about the game. From new resources to totally new mechanics, it’s a transformative update despite coming late in the game’s lifespan. A new facet of that has arrived, with the addition of an official selection of cheats.
From infinite money to teleporting NPCs, even vanilla players can enjoy the benefits of console cheat commands. However, they need to do some things before using cheat commands.
How to enable hidden cheats in Stardew Valley 1.6 on PC
Players must edit the save file before cheats can be used in Stardew Valley.
Follow the steps below to edit a save:
- Install Sublime Text and its Package Control extension
- Follow the instructions on adding plugins via Package Control
- Press Windows + R and type (%appdata\StardewValley\Saves) to open the saves folder
- Backup the chosen save file
- Open the save file with Sublime Text
- Click on Selection > Format > Indent XML
- Find the <AllowChatCheats> element and set its value to true
- Open Stardew Valley
- Run the edited save
From here, players can input /money “amount” and /debug “command” (without the quotes) to start cheating. The selection of cheats is fairly limited, but allows players to instantly alter the date and time, as well as their stats. Here are all the cheats:
Cheats | Function |
player_setmaximumhealth <amount> | Changes the player’s total health |
player_setmaxstamina <amount> | Changes the player’s total stamina |
hurry_all | Warps all NPCs to their scheduled positions |
world_settime <time> (Note: use military time) | Changes the time of day |
world_setseason | Changes the in-game season |
world_setyear | Changes the in-game year |
These cheats are not as robust as a full modding kit. Players are not able to freely spawn specific items or seriously affect NPC relationships or behavior. However, the ability to change time and stats carries major implications.
Can console and mobile players use cheats in Stardew Valley?
Stardew Valley players on console and mobile devices cannot use cheats.
Unfortunately, while all platforms now have 1.6.9. as their latest version, cheats still can’t be used on platforms with uneditable save files. This means that cheats are exclusive to PC players. Though not as massive as the lack of modding support for Stardew Valley on consoles, the addition of official cheat support further cements playing on PC as the definitive experience.
Still, the update was much appreciated by fans, as players can now enjoy Stardew Valley the same way across all platforms.
