An official developer update for MultiVersus has revealed the release date for the game’s official launch and everything new that’s coming with it.
MultiVersus was first announced in November 2021 as a crossover fighting game in the same vein as Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. The title’s open beta ended in June 2023, after which the game went off the radar, despite its initial release date being August 9, 2022. All fans had to go on was the new “early 2024” release window developer Player First Games gave. Now there’s more information.
In a new developer update, MultiVersus game director Tony Hyunh shared new information regarding the game including additions and changes that will be made for its official launch. Just as importantly, the date of the full release for MultiVersus was also confirmed.
MultiVersus moves to Unreal Engine 5, implementing new netcode
The official release of MultiVersus will run on Unreal Engine 5 and will have different netcode from what was used in the beta version. New stages, characters, and a PvE mode will also come to the game, though it’s unknown if they’ll be included at launch.
The director stated that MultiVersus will get a massive upgrade to its graphics with the move to Unreal Engine 5. He also added that the game’s netcode was reworked, though it’s unclear what style will be used. Rollback netcode is the norm for fighting games, with major releases including Dragon Ball FighterZ and Tekken 8 both utilizing it.
MultiVersus boasts characters from all kinds of media, including Bugs Bunny, Batman, Superman, LeBron James, Shaggy, Jake the Dog, and more. While Hyunh didn’t mention anyone, he shared that more characters will join the MultiVersus roster, but didn’t specify who will be added or whether there will be new characters added on the official release date. He also stated that more stages would come to the title while showing some concept art.
One of the final things the director touched upon in the update was that in the future, MultiVersus will include a PvE mode, allowing fans to play the game outside of a competitive environment. This mode will provide players with unique rewards as well. However, it’s unknown how the mode will play, so it’s unclear if it will be some sort of campaign, an arcade mode, or something else.
Official release date for MultiVersus revealed
MultiVersus is releasing on May 28, 2024, as a free-to-play title for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC.
While the game is free, it will have microtransactions that require real money. The known elements include Gleamium, an in-game currency used to purchase cosmetic items and characters, and a Battle Pass, where players complete challenges and missions to earn in-game rewards after acquiring it.
Although players can unlock characters using Gleamium, it’s also possible to unlock them through regular gameplay.
