Information on Nintendo Switch 2’s production just leaked, offering some clues about its release date and the potential reveal plans.
The Switch 2’s existence was an open secret by early 2024. Reports of developers demoing the new console behind closed doors at conventions sparked much discussion. Nintendo hadn’t released a new console in seven years, which is the longest gap between releases in the company’s history. The console was limited in terms of its capabilities at launch, and things haven’t improved over time.
Eventually, in a surprisingly casual post, Nintendo confirmed the successor to the Nintendo Switch existed. Not only that, the company will announce the console within the fiscal year, between June 2024 and March 2025. While fans loved the news, it didn’t enlighten them on when it will actually come out. Recent leaks could give fans a clue about the Switch 2 release date.
Nintendo Switch 2 console production likely to begin in September
A manufacturer of Nintendo console components announced it will begin producing parts for a new console before the end of September 2024.
Weltrend Semiconductor, a semiconductor manufacturer that has worked with all three major console manufacturers, delivered the news. This included a casual reveal that work begun work on the Switch 2 hardware.
The Weltrend Semiconductor CEO stated that the company has seen an uptick in orders for hardware for new models of game consoles from all three consoles, per MoneyDJ. This includes a new model of Nintendo Switch.
Weltrend Semiconductor is one of the manufacturers Nintendo has contracted to supply parts for the existing Switch console. If the company’s set to produce more units of “new” Nintendo Switch models, that could mean the Switch 2’s announcement date is imminent.
The news lines up with Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa’s statements regarding Switch manufacturing in a 2024 investor Q&A.
“Although we were unable to produce sufficient quantities of Nintendo Switch hardware last year and the year before due to a shortage of semiconductor components, this situation has now been resolved,” said Furukawa in the Q&A.
As promised, production on the Switch will reportedly avoid the issues of the previous years. As for the future of the OG Switch, Nintendo hasn’t made it clear. Some fans worry the OG Switch will follow the Wii U to the grave. Given its massive success, that likely won’t happen anytime soon.
Switch 2 release date still amorphous
The Nintendo Switch 2 is reportedly slated for a 2025 release, likely in the first half of the year.
Nintendo reportedly poured cold water on the idea of an imminent release, suggesting Q2 2025 was the earliest time fram. However, reports also state that the company is looking to preempt shortage issues. Getting several months of full-scale manufacturing in would help with this.
Nintendo is yet to officially give any info on the console beyond its existence. Regardless, a reveal before the end of the fiscal year is confirmed. A reveal could be imminent, as a means to prevent leaks from manufacturers similar to what was seen with the PS5 Slim.
