The Nintendo Switch 2’s release date has reportedly been moved back. Again.
The next-generation Switch console was leaked earlier this year and its release date has been the biggest topic surrounding its existence. In early 2024, leaks started surfacing that the Nintendo Switch 2 was coming in late 2024, aligning it with the holiday season. Then six months ago, the timetable reportedly shifted in a way that would see the console’s release date moved to the first quarter of 2025 to increase supply and improve the launch lineup.
Now, a report claims that the Nintendo Switch 2 won’t be coming by early 2025 after all.
Nintendo Switch 2 release date delayed again, leaving fans upset
GamesIndustry.biz’s Microcast stated that Nintendo is telling developers that the Switch 2 release date is later than has been reported.
In the report, the Microcast stated that developers they spoke to were told not to expect the Nintendo Switch 2 any time this fiscal year. The fiscal year for Nintendo ends March 31, 2025.
Nintendo told shareholders earlier this year that the next-gen console’s reveal was planned for this fiscal year. According to GI Microcast, that remains the plan, but don’t expect to purchase the console in the first quarter of 2025 either.
Previously, it was stated that the new Switch console would be released in March 2025. The Microcast stated that the “hope” is it comes out by April or May instead of “late” 2025. Why?
Upon hearing that the Nintendo Switch 2 may possibly be coming even later in 2025 than previously expected, Nintendo fans couldn’t help but become upset at yet another delay. Some joked that they couldn’t keep waiting and were going to break down and buy a Steam Deck instead. Others lamented that the Switch 2’s hardware will be dated before it comes out. Dissenting Nintendo fans stated they’d rather the company take its time rather than rush out a console with issues.
It’s unknown what the cause for this delay is.
Though reports from numerous outlets pointed to March 2025 as the release window, Nintendo never confirmed this. Supply chain or manufacturing issues are possible, but unconfirmed. Nintendo could also be building the console’s launch around specific games and delays during development may have altered that timetable. The Nintendo Switch’s sales might also be strong enough to hold back a successor.
Regardless, moving the release date outside the current fiscal year may not mean a radical change. It could be a delay as short as a month or a few weeks. Either way, fans can only wait.
