Twitch-partnered streamer Frogan has landed at the center of one of Twitch’s hottest controversies of the day, but what is it that has people so mad?
Frogan is a Twitch streamer with nearly 60,000 followers that streams games and discusses the daily news. She is largely known as Hasan “HasanAbi” Piker’s mod, who is effectively the face of political streaming. Now, however, she has blown up on X after a clip went viral of her talking negatively about the military.
So what did she say and why are people so mad about this?
Who is Frogan?
Frogan, who sometimes goes by Fr0gan, is a partnered Twitch streamer who is primarily known for her association with Hasan Piker. Half Lebanese and half white, Frogan is from a Muslim family and grew up in Michigan.
The 27-year-old was previously a public health scientist but quit her job to get into streaming full-time back in 2022. Her world views and connection to HasanAbi launched her career forward in 2022. She began to break out on her own in 2023 and was awarded the Rising Star Award at the Streamer Awards.
Frogan is no stranger to controversy. In 2023, Frogan argued with Ethan “H3H3” Klein over the Israel-Hamas war, with the streamer criticizing H3H3 as supporting Israel.
What is the controversy surrounding Frogan?
Frogan angered users after wishing ill upon members of the United States military.
“I will never have any f—–g pity for any f—–g soldiers. US military? Boo-f—–g-hoo. I hope you get PTSD,” she said in a clip that has gone viral
Later, after acknowledging a donation, Frogan clarified that she only wishes PTSD on US soldiers who just “want student loans” and haven’t acknowledged what they did wrong by joining the military and expressed no desire to change. To the others, Frogan said she hopes they don’t get health insurance when they return to America after serving.
Some immediately reacted with outrage towards Frogan and Twitch after hearing of the commentary. But in response to the backlash, Frogan reacted to her viral clip with laughter and called it “based.”
“Am I supposed to be… I’m not walking back on it. I still f—–g agree with it. Uh, based?” Frogan said on stream.
Will Twitch ban Frogan?
Twitch banned Frogan on October 21, 2024. The platform took some time to commit, despite Frogan’s statements breaking Twitch’s guidelines on hateful conduct.
This section states that Twitch “does not permit” behavior that can be interpreted as hate, intolerance, harassment, or discrimination based on someone’s race, ethnicity, gender identity, disability, and veteran status, among other things. Many wondered why Twitch was not responding to the viral clip despite “veteran status” being mentioned in its hateful conduct section.
The controversy grew large enough that it attracted Twitch’s attention, but no sanction came through for some time. Frogan herself responded to the controversy before the ban, defending her overall message while apologizing for part of the discourse regarding military members.
Frogan’s ban is a temporary one
Frogan’s ban from Twitch is a temporary one. However, according to Frogan, it was not related to her criticism of the United States military.
Frogan’s Twitch channel explicitly denotes that her content is temporarily unavailable. This is indicative, as one would expect, of a temporary ban. Channels that are permanently shut down are labeled as “currently unavailable.”
According to Frogan, the ban will be in place for 30 days. She specifically criticized the ban’s monthlong duration, contrasting it with Asmongold’s two-week ban for statements where he advocated for what he later acknowledged to be “an ongoing genocide.”
