The Witcher 4 is currently in development, and some fans wonder if Geralt will return and be playable in the new game.
The Witcher trilogy of games is a story of consistent success. Developer CD Projekt Red reached out to author Andrzej Sapkowski for the rights to create a video game based on his novel The Witcher. Published in 2007, The Witcher began the video game trilogy and received critical acclaim and moderate commercial success.
The series reached the apex of its cultural relevancy with The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt in 2015. As of March 2023, The Witcher 3 has sold over 50 million units, making it the highest-selling game in CD Projekt Red’s history. After Cyberpunk 2077, the company now returns to its roots with an upcoming Witcher sequel.
But will the franchise’s iconic protagonist Geralt return in The Witcher 4?
Will Geralt be playable in The Witcher 4?
Geralt will no longer be the main protagonist of The Witcher 4., but that doesn’t mean he won’t be playable After three games following the grizzled Witcher, Geralt is confirmed to no longer star as The Witcher 4’s main protagonist. However, that does not necessarily mean he won’t be playable. CD Projekt Red confirmed the character’s loss of the main protagonist status, but not whether he’ll be playable.
After all, The Witcher 3 had Ciri as a playable character while sharing the spotlight with Geralt. Perhaps The Witcher 4 may feature some playable sections featuring Geralt, whether through flashbacks or in the introduction as a “passing of the torch” moment.
Will Geralt appear in Witcher 4?
Geralt’s voice actor Doug Cockle confirms Geralt will appear in The Witcher 4. In a video from the YouTube channel Fall Damage, Cockle re-enacted iconic lines from the Witcher franchise. Around seven minutes in, Cockle reveals The Witcher 4 will indeed have Geralt, but he doesn’t know how much of a presence he will have in the story.
“I have not seen any script yet, I couldn’t tell you if I did,” Cockle said.
He jokingly admits he could be lying through his teeth, which is a possibility for the industry. Hiding exciting news has become part of the video game hype cycle. Tekken director Katsuhiro Harada claimed Heihachi was dead in a 2023 interview, only for Heihachi to return as DLC for that game 2024.
With the development of Witcher 4 at full speed, fans hopefully don’t have to wait until 2077 for its release.
