Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater’s release date is approaching and fans now know whether it will include the MGO online multiplayer game mode.
While MGS 3 is mostly remembered as Snake Eater, the version that has been remastered, re-released, and ported to other platforms is actually Subsistence. Like Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, MGS3 Subsistence was the same core game with extra content around it. This re-release for the PlayStation 2 included small bits of additional content alongside major gameplay additions.
The addition that became standard was a controllable camera, rather than a fixed camera. The addition that was beloved but has popped in and out over the years is online multiplayer. Metal Gear Solid 3’s MGO multiplayer was beloved by fans but was infamously cut from the HD Remaster for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, then from the Master Collection in 2023. So is there any hope for MGO in this remaster?
Will Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater have MGO?
MGO will not be in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater at launch.
While the release date for the MGS3 remake hasn’t been revealed yet, international gaming media is getting hands-on time with the game. One of those outlets is French outlet Jeuxvideo, which published and quickly deleted a hands-on preview of the game. As part of it, they explicitly noted that it won’t initially be included in the game.
Metal Gear Solid 3 had the original MGO multiplayer mode, which became a staple of the series for a time. Alongside standard matchmaking options like deathmatch, it dabbled with novel concepts like asymmetrical multiplayer. It also retained many of the quirks of Metal Gear’s single-player mode, like segregated areas, camouflage, and unusual weapons. Though the game was rough, it is fondly remembered by many for its wackiness.
While MGO isn’t set to be part of the game at launch, that doesn’t mean it’s gone forever.
Will Metal Gear Online be in the MGS3 remake as DLC?
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater may have MGO as DLC, but it’s unclear whether this will happen.
The topic of online multiplayer as it relates to the MGS3 remake keeps coming up, including in official materials. An official developer livestream in June 2024 included fan responses asking for Metal Gear Online. The developers didn’t discuss MGO but many fans are choosing to believe, given the lack of a firm statement regarding a return in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.
Realistically, a return is probably unlikely. Given the number of changes to the graphics and gameplay, some facets of the original MGO wouldn’t necessarily work in the remake.
But until Konami gives a definitive word, fans can still hold onto hope.
