Activision wants everyone to zoom around the maps. At least, it seems like that’s the case given that slide cancels are coming back in Modern Warfare 3.
The game still hasn’t been officially revealed yet, but that hasn’t stopped the developers from teasing fans. To this point, the only news on Modern Warfare 3 was a leak coming from a box factory partnered with Monster Energy Drink. The marketing for the newest Call of Duty title is spinning into gear though, and part of that was a weird merch pack sent to influencers.
A group of North American Call of Duty content creators received a merch package from the company. Previous merch send-outs usually contained wearable stuff the content creator could show off. This time, around the contents were a little cryptic.
Will slide cancels return in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3?
Slide cancels will be returning to Modern Warfare 3.
The merch package contained a can, an old cell phone, and a pair of flip-flips, also called slides. FaZe Swagg, a popular Call of Duty content creator, posted the unboxing video on his social media account.
It didn’t take long for the streamers to piece together the message, which reads Slides, Can, Cellphone. This can be broken down further to Slide, Can, Cell, or slide cancel. Barring a committed trolling of its fandom, this means that slide cancels will return in Modern Warfare 3.
The package also had a bloodstained, handwritten note that read: “I was barely able to get this out of the prison. No time to explain, use these items to prepare for what’s to come.”
FaZe Swagg also discussed receiving a message on the cell phone that read, “You’ll be expected to move quickly in Al Mazrah.” Al Mazrah is a fictional location in the Modern Warfare universe.
These are clear indications of slide cancel in Modern Warfare 3 and possibly in Warzone 2.
What is a slide cancel in Call of Duty?
Slide cancels are a technique in Call of Duty games that let players maintain the momentum of sliding while running. This lets players zip around the map while dodging enemy fire. The added movement speed lets players close the distance, reach objectives, and generally flank the enemy faster.
The movement combo gained notoriety in Modern Warfare 2019, where it would induce camera glitches. Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War removed the mechanic by making the slide unskippable.
Modern Warfare 2 also didn’t include the traditional slide cancel. Removal of the mechanic from MW2 and Warzone 2 was met with backlash from fans. However, developer Sledgehammer Games seems eager to please and will bring back the popular movement mechanic.
