Cyberpunk 2077 may have had a rough start as a game, but anime fans have been anxiously wondering if there will be a Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 since the show’s premiere.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, an anime on Netflix that takes place in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, came out in September 2023. It centered around a street kid who becomes an edgerunner, a sort of mercenary, to survive in the gritty city. Despite garnering overwhelmingly strong reviews, CD Projekt representatives have been adamant in the past that there would not be another season.
Fans wanting to see more of Lucy and David have reason to hope for a return, though. A recent interview with Nowakowski hints that the show may return in one form or another.
Are they making Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2?
More Cyberpunk animations are coming, but it’s unknown whether these will be continuations of Edgerunners or new projects.
During a recent CD Projekt earnings call, Nowakowski was asked if they were planning for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2. He didn’t give a definitive answer, but suggested that fans can look forward to more action.
“We are definitely planning to do more in terms of animation with Cyberpunk, so I hope that’s enough as an answer,” Nowakowski said.
The CD Projekt Red CEO also said that fans should “expect to see more” but that he couldn’t get into any specific details at the time of the call. While Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 remains far from confirmed, this does give fans reason to hope for more. This begs the question…
When could Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 come out?
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 likely wouldn’t come out until 2026, at the absolute earliest.
One season of anime generally takes around two years to complete and CD Projekt Red was vehemently denying plans to make Edgerunners Season 2 into 2023. It’s still unclear whether plans have changed but if they did, fans likely won’t see the fruits of it for some time. But once again, neither CD Projekt Red nor Studio Trigger have announced Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 2.
The first season had just 10 episodes, ending with some potential cliffhangers that could lead to more action in Season 2. This includes David receiving immunosuppresants from Doc to fight his cyberpsychosis. There are a lot of risks involved with his treatments and his work, but he’s willing to risk them to save Lucy.
He runs out of the immunosuppresants and slips deeper into cyberpsychosis during a chaotic final fight scene. Lucy brings him back and they make their way to Rebecca and Falco. This happens just in time to see Rebecca crushed to death by Smasher. David fights the Smasher and is ripped apart.
Lucy escapes with valuable information that will most likely lead to her being chased by Arasaka. Fans believe Lucy could even star in Season 2 although some also feel that David didn’t actually die, despite being ripped in half. Fans may or may not find out what happens next. In the meantime, fans can look forward to Lucy arriving in Guilty Gear Strive.
