The Devil May Cry franchise has been on hold for the past five years but there might be hope for Devil May Cry 6 or a Devil May Cry 3 remake.
Capcom has one of the most expansive libraries of classic games in the industry. From established franchises like Resident Evil to cult classics like Viewtiful Joe, the company has no shortage of games to draw from for remakes and revivals. One that sits in the middle of those two archetypes is Devil May Cry.
The series helped popularize the “character action game” concept, paving the way for series like Bayonetta and Nier. The series has still stayed somewhat niche relative to the likes of Monster Hunter and Resident Evil, though. That has left some wondering if there’s any hope for it, or if Capcom is prepared to leave it in the past. Market polling from the company suggests that Dante and Vergil may be set for a comeback.
Is Capcom making a Devil May Cry 6?
It is unknown if Capcom is working on Devil May Cry 6.
The franchise has experienced long gaps between mainline games before. The gap between Devil May Cry 4 and Devil May Cry 5, 2008 and 2019, respectively, lasted over a decade. In the interim, the controversial DmC Devil May Cry reboot launched and divided fans, though it was a commercial success.
If Devil May Cry 6 happens, it may not come out any time soon and may not be the next Devil May Cry project.
Hideaki Itsuno, the series director, worked on Devil May Cry 5 for over five years. Although proud of his accomplishment, Itsuno immediately worked on the other projects he put off because of Devil May Cry 5. Dragon’s Dogma 2 is one such title, and its success validates Itsuno’s decision to take a step back from the Devil May Cry franchise.
While a sixth entry isn’t imminent, remakes might paint a more optimistic picture.
Devil May Cry 3 remake may come before a new DMC game
A Devil May Cry 3 remake performed very well in a fan poll from Capcom, which suggests it could be the next Devil May Cry game.
Earlier in 2024, the company held the Capcom Super Elections to gauge which franchises held the most fan interest. With over 250,000 poll participants, it’s a good sample size for fans of all sorts. Devil May Cry ranked third in the category for the question about franchises fans want to see new games from with over 60,000 votes.
The most-requested game was Dino Crisis, which is understandable given the game’s cult status and the fact it hasn’t had a new game since 2003.
Devil May Cry creator Hideki Kamiya has expressed interest in remaking Devil May Cry 1 with Capcom in the past. Kamiya shared this sentiment right before the wave of Resident Evil remakes hit the market in 2019. With Capcom’s surprise trailer for the Dead Rising remake, Devil May Cry may not be so far behind.
